Jeep has seen some decline in sales for quite some time now and is banking on this updated Compass to kick-start its development in India again. It has announced that after the launch of Compass, it will launch 3 more products within the next two years. This includes a locally assembled Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. The other big launch will be the Jeep Compass 7-seater. All these factors combined mean that Jeep and has an interesting and busy time ahead in the Indian automobile industry. But let us focus on the updated Jeep Compass for now. 2021 Jeep Compass – Exterior [Jeep Compass] The front of the new Compass does get a lot of changes, including redesigned LED Headlamps and DRLs. The front bumper has also been redesigned. The trademark seven-slat grille has also been updated a bit. The fog lamps housing and air dam have been changed as well. The new alloys look particularly bold. Overall, however, the design and styling of this new Compass remain the same. There are no noticeable changes to the sides or the rear. It still looks like a typical Jeep with a boxy and squared-off design. 2021 Jeep Compass – Interior It is only fair to say that Jeep has completely redone the interiors of the Compass with this update. The connected car tech UConnect 5 seems to be the most important feature in the floating 10.1-inch Digital Infotainment System placed in the center of the dashboard with integrated Alexa support and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This system can also receive Over-the-air updates. Apart from these features Compass gets a whole host of convenience features including dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, powered tailgate, a 360-degree view camera, 8-way electrically-adjustable and ventilated front seats. On the safety front, Compass comes with a ton of features including ABS with EBD and brake assist, Electronic Stability Program, Hill-Start Assist and Traction Control. Of course, the top of the line diesel comes with an option of a 4×4 drive system. 2021 Jeep Compass – Engine and Transmission The Compass is offered in both petrol and diesel options. The 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine makes 163hp and 250Nm and comes with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT automatic. The 2.0-litre diesel engine produces 173hp and 350Nm and comes with either a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed torque converter. It must be noted that these are the exact same engines that were available with the outgoing models as well. 2021 Jeep Compass – Prices and Rivals The updated Jeep Compass does come with a premium, with the range starting from Rs 16.99 lakh, all the way to Rs 28.29 lakh, ex-showroom for the 4×4 diesel. This is a wide bracket of price range and therefore the rivals include products from different segments including Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Hyundai Tucson All-new Tata Safari, upcoming Skoda Karoq. It can also be customized to detect whether he/she is seated in the right position to avoid hazards when airbags are deployed. Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) Update FOTA is a remote software management technology that enables wireless firmware update on embedded systems. The automotive industry is extensively used to update vehicle ECU software with new features, facilitate bug fixes, and replace older versions of firmware. A firmware server located in an IoT Cloud Infrastructure sends new firmware for the vehicle’s ECU through a wireless channel such as BLE, WiFi, or GPRS. During the FOTA update process, either the existing firmware in the vehicle ECU is replaced with a new firmware image, or a patch is added. The desired changes are hence, updated in the ECU through remote connectivity. Road Condition Analytics and Navigation One of the most exciting use cases of IoT in the automotive domain is road condition analysis and navigation assistance. Smartphone applications, powered by AI, can detect the condition of roads in real-time. This enables the driver to be updated on accidents, road closures, speed limits, construction work, etc., on his/her route. Empowered with this data, the driver can choose to take an alternate route to reach the destination. The smartphone apps are also integrated with a navigation facility. This helps guide the driver to his/her destination while also providing the most optimum path based on real-time road conditions and traffic. This information can be precious to drivers who are traveling through an unfamiliar route! Digital Cockpit Solutions A digital cockpit in a car offers a luxurious and personalized experience to the driver and passengers.
