Your Daily Automobile updates From Around The World [img]  [Learn more about RevenueStripe...]( [img]( [The Automobile News]( [BS6 Engine technology]( BS-VI engine is the latest and ongoing technology according to the norms of BSES. It is the 6th standard norm under BSES to control pollution resulting from vehicle emissions. Full form of BSES is Bharat stage emission standards. BSES are the standards set for the emission of pollutants from the vehicles to make a check on air pollution taking place through autogas discharge. The purpose of these norms is to reduce and control the air pollution through automobiles in India as much as possible. [This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bs6.jpg] Coming to the working scenario of BSES, BSES standards were established by the Government of India and now they are governed and managed by the Central Pollution Control Board which comes under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The first norm of BSES was introduced in India in 1991 for petrol engines and 1992 for diesel engines. Coming back to BS-VI engine, it is the most recently introduced technology under the BSES norms and was announced mandatory on 1st April 2020 in the entire country as the Supreme Court of India declared ban on BS-IV. Actually, due to increased pollution in Delhi, the Ministry of Petroleum decided to bring BS-VI fuels in Delhi in 2017 itself but automobile manufacturers were not technically ready and planned it for 2020 so BS-VI could not make it up before 2020. BENEFITS OF BS-VI ENGINE [This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bs4.jpg] As the technology changes towards betterment it shows a bit hike in prices but in return, it could save many people from harmful lung diseases caused by harmful gas emissions from vehicles so it balances the cost hike of BS-VI vehicles. Talking about the benefits, one of the major technical advantages of BS-VI engines is in terms of sulphur and nitrogen oxide. It has been noticed that sulphur traces in BS-VI engines are found almost 5 times lower than they are found in BS-IV engine emissions. Focusing in the terms of petrol and diesel engines, BS-VI petrol engines lowers the emission of sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and other toxic hydrocarbons. BS-VI Diesel engines presented a delightful performance by cutting down particulate matter emissions to half, hence contributed efficiently in pollution control. However, BSES norms for vehicles do not show a great difference in mileage but still small hikes can be seen in the fuel economy of the vehicles. Not only in the motor vehicles emissions but sulphur and nitrogen oxides are already present in petrol and diesel, therefore even the fuels were saturated and modified according to the BS-VI engines which consist of less toxic oxides so that the emission could be less harmful. Even the fuels for BS-VI engines are made available in India from April 2020. There are many benefits of using a vehicle with BS-VI engines and hence BS-VI engines should be promoted in India. [This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bs5.jpg] There’s nothing vast in this norm, it only states the amount of cut down of toxic emissions to be done essentially. BS-VI was announced in April 2020, but came into the proposal in 2017 observing the drastic increase in the air pollution in Delhi, hence considering the serious consequences some new things have been added to this norm that weren’t there in the last several BSES norms. Till now the BSES norms used to mention about sulphur and nitrogen contents in the vehicles’ smoke emissions but in BS-VI, control on hydrocarbons and particulate matter (PM) has also been added to ensure more safety in the terms of increasing air pollution. The Bharat Stage Emission Standards 6th norm (BS-VI) says, vehicles running on petrol will have to reduce their nitrogen oxide emission by 25% and vehicles running on diesel will have to reduce their hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides emissions by 43%, nitrogen oxides levels by 68% and particulate matter levels by 82%. Control board has made some serious changes especially for diesel engines which may give positive results in return. Why did BS-V engines never come into play? At present concept of both the norms are dissolved under a single standard i.e. BS-VI. BS-V norm was skipped by the Control Board, though there wasn’t a huge difference between the concepts of BS-V and BS-VI but this isn’t the reason why BS-V never got introduced. The main reason is the long interval between BS-III and BS-IV, as it took 2017 for BS-IV to come into existence in the entire country and with the conditions of Delhi that was getting worse in 2018, it was important to soon get a new and advanced emission norm. So BS-V was skipped and directly BS-VI was introduced by adding on some more advanced requirements in the ongoing concept. BS-IV vs BS-VI [This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bs2.png] Looking back at the history of these emission norms, before 2020 our vehicles were running on BS-IV engines which were introduced in 2017, before this BS-III came in 2005 and got implemented all over India in 2010 even before that we used to follow BS-II that was introduced in 2000. But major changes can be seen in the concept of BS-VI, as it is a precise and stricter norm as compared to BS-IV. BS-VI norms stated the emission of nitrogen oxides at 250mg/km (reduced to 80mg/km in BS-VI) for diesel engines and emissions of hydrocarbons at 300mg/km (reduced to 170mg/km in BS-VI), this major change will surely play an important role in controlling the air pollution through vehicles. Other than emissions control, the crucial role that can be observed is the BS-VI fuel contains very low sulphur traces and nitrogen oxide levels are cut down to up to 70% in diesel and 25% in petrol, so that the traces of pollutants will be automatically reduced at the time of emission. [This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bs3.png] Other than these pollutants reduction steps, some features have also been declared as mandatory in BS-VI engine vehicles like On-board diagnostics which is a really useful feature to keep a check on emission information of the vehicle as it provides the status of a vehicle’s particular system. One more feature is namely Real Driving Emission, that will measure the real-world emission status of the car i.e. checking the amount of sulphur and nitrogen traces getting emitted by the car while driven on the road. BS-VI norms contain a lot of overall advantageous concepts, but coming to the drawbacks, there are no such drawbacks of a BS-VI engine but just one matter of concern and that is its price. But price will increase with an updated technology and in return, it is giving us a lot of benefits, so overall it’s a very convenient and useful norm. These royals would ride atop their steeds in gem-flecked carriages called howdahs, decorated with gemstones. In 21st-century America we don’t have royalty. But we have howdah-carrying elephants. They’re called Chevy Suburbans. I picked up Mrs. Payne for a night out this summer in Chevy’s all-new 2021 model. When we arrived at the Clarkston Union Bar & Kitchen, the elephant — er, Suburban — dropped 2 inches to allow for easier egress for my 5’5” wife. Thank an all-new air suspension, part of a comprehensive remake of one of the bowtie brand’s most beloved vehicles. The Suburban is the stretched version of the Tahoe, the Brobdingnagian mega-utes based on the same truck platform as the mega-selling Chevy Silverado. Sister brand GMC has its own version called the Yukon, while crosstown rival Ford puts its Expedition atop the Ford F-150 platform. Like the full-size pickup market, truck-based SUVs are dominated by Detroit automakers with Suburbans, Tahoes and Expeditions ruling the road like, well, elephants. But for 2021, the Tahoe and Suburban have taken significant steps to separate themselves from their truck kin. Silverado and Suburban badges have always suggested a difference between ranch workhorse and family transport, but now it’s more than just a name, third-row seats and a hatch. For the first time ever, Tahoe and Suburban get more upscale independent rear suspension and unique interiors. I’ve yet to drive the Tahoe, so I’ll focus on my Suburban Z71 tester. I am already a fan of the new Silverado, the lightest truck in class thanks to a 400-pound diet over the last generation due to shrewd multi-metal chassis engineering. Suburban inherits this chassis, then adds car-like independent rear suspension making it a joy to drive. [The second row of the 2021 Chevy Suburban gets a palatial view with the sunroof.] The smoother road ride over Metro Detroit’s ox-cart roads is welcome — but the SUV’s light weight (Suburban saves 300 pounds over the last gen) still means it’s fun to drive on-road. Pity my poor third-row passengers. This thing is an ocean-liner, stretched another four inches over its predecessor. Second-row seats not only gain 10 inches of legroom, but the captain’s chairs slide, allowing for easy third-row seat access. The rug rats are waaay back in coach now. Curled up in their seats, headphones on, playing their video games, they deserve a warning when dad decides to have fun in the twisties. Might I suggest an intercom system like an ocean liner? Attention passengers: the captain is about to have a little fun. An intercom system (I’m not kidding, actually — the Kia Telluride has one and it’s a lot shorter than the Suburban) is one of the few things missing from this technological tour de force. The other is adaptive cruise control, which GM has been notoriously reticent in offering in vehicles from the Chevy Traverse to the Corvette. ACC comes standard on my wife’s $21,395, all-wheel-drive Subaru Impreza hatchback for goodness sake. And on one of my favorite SUVs, the $23,000 Mazda CX-30. [Flatten the seats, and the cargo area of the 2021 Chevy Suburban will swallow a small grocery store.] For a long-distance cruiser like the Suburban (starting at $57,795), adaptive cruise should be standard as well. Suburban doesn’t even offer it until the High Country trim, starting at the kingly sum of $77,890. Or my $78,925 (cough) Z71 tester. My recent $72,075 Corvette C8 ride didn’t have adaptive cruise, either. The good news is there are other Suburban features that favorably reminded me of King ’Vette — and the Cadillac CT4-V. That’s because the interior has been comprehensively overhauled compared to Chevy and GMC Sierra pickups I’ve recently inhabited. The latter felt dated with, for example, stalk shifters and low infotainment screens. Maybe the Ford Expedition’s stylish new interior got GM’s attention. The Suburban brings a modern electronic “trigger shifter” (a dash-mounted version similar to the Corvette). The tablet screen is mounted high on the dash — see Caddy and ’Vette — making for better visibility so I could keep my eyes on the road while accessing Chevy’s typical blizzard of tech offerings, from Sirius XM to Wi-Fi hot spot to nav system. Forget the nav system, actually, as Suburban offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard. My wife still swears by them as the best map guidance in autodom. “Go to Clarkson Union” I barked and Android Auto had it on our tablet screen in a jiffy. [Intimidated? The front end of the 2021 Chevy Suburban Z71 is blacked out with fearsome grille and skid plate underneath for off-road exploration.] Stomp the gas pedal and V-8 Corvette tunes fill the cabin. My eight-holer was of the smaller, 5.3-liter variety. Those wanting the Full-Monty, 6.2-liter V-8 ’Vette experience will have to jump (as with adaptive cruise) a rung to the High Country model. There are a lot of rungs. Six in all as the Suburban lineup looks a bit like the endless, eight-trim Silverado — something for everyone. I like my Z71, thank you very much. The Z71 gives the big bus a rugged, off-road swagger with blacked-out grille and nameplates complimenting its chiseled flanks and LED running lights. Royal elephants would kill for this kind of bling. With a higher approach angle, skid plate, standard four-wheel-drive, all-terrain tires, two-speed transfer case, Hill Descent Control and red tow hooks, the Z71 elephant could credibly do support vehicle duty if you wanted to tow your ATVs to a Michigan off-road park. Such work is usually the domain of pickups, but they cease to be passenger friendly aft of their crew cab. Stretching almost 19 feet from stem to stern, the Suburban is just shy of the 19.2-foot long Silverado with 5.8-foot bed — which means 41.5 cubic feet of storage in back for a Conestoga wagon with 550 miles of range. [The 2021 Chevy Suburban features plenty of technology including smartphone compatibility, button transmission and tablet screen with 4G Wifi.] And it’s covered like a Conestoga. Inside are options galore — befitting a Chevy that can easily price out in the neighborhood of a Mercedes GLE SUV. My favorite features include the second-row captain’s chairs, which, like minivan seats, can flatten into an ottoman. I liked sitting in the third row, propping up my size 15 feet on the second-row stool and getting laptop work done while on the road. And the center console island? It moves. Push an overhead button and the whole console slides backward, revealing a hidden drawer underneath — good for stowing valuables or just everyday items like charging cords for the two USB jacks in the back seat. It’s one fancy carriage. Maybe they should have called it the Chevy Howdah. Every now and then, we have witnessed these machines at different automobile carnivals. Here’re top 6 SUVs we want to see in India. 1. MARUTI SUZUKI JIMNY The Indo-Japanese carmaker unveiled the 3-door version of the new Jimny Sierra at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo. While we have heard multiple rumours around its India launch, there is no official word on the same. Even if India is on its launch radar, the company will bring in the 5-door Jimy as a lifestyle product. Here, the small off-road SUV might be offered with a 1.5L petrol engine that’s good enough for 100bhp and 130Nm. Transmission duties will be done by a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter automatic unit. The new Jimny will come with 4WD (four-wheel-drive) system.  2. HYUNDAI PALISADE Rumour has it that the South Korean carmaker is considering the Hyundai Palisade SUV for the Indian market. Currently, the company is conducting feasibility study for the vehicle. Globally, the Palisade is offered with two seating configurations – 7 and 8-seater. The overall length, width and height of the SUV stand at 4980mm, 1975mm and 1750mm respectively. For power, Hyundai’s flagship SUV uses a 3.8L V6 direct injection petrol engine pushing out 291bhp and 355Nm of torque. In India, it could be offered with a 2.2L turbo diesel motor making 200bhp and 441Nm. The oil burner will be mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with a multi-plate torque converter. Both 2WD and HTRAC 4WD drivetrain systems will be on offer. 3. FORD BRONCO The new-generation Ford Bronco has created a buzz among enthusiasts across the globe. Though, the rugged-looking SUV will be exclusively sold in the North American markets from the next year. The new Bronco family includes three models – 2-door, 4-door and Bronco Sport. It has some serious off-road capabilities, thanks to its Sasquatch pack that includes off-road tyres ranging from 35-inch fitted on 17-inch bedlock wheels, rear locking differentials and off-road suspension setup. The SUV comes loaded with several advanced goodies including 12-inch SYNC4 system with OTA (Over-the-Air) updates and FordPass performance app, a 360 degree camera with off-road spotter, Ford C-Pilo 60 driver assist technology, trailer sway control, advancyTrac with roll stability control and many more. 4. TATA BLACKBIRD It isn’t a secret that Tata Motors is planning to foray into the premium compact SUV space with an all-new model (codenamed – Tata Blackbird). The new 5-seater compact SUV was reported to come under joint venture of Tata and the China-based Chery Automobile Co.Ltd. However, the carmaker delayed its plan due to the recent India-China border tension. If reports are to be believed, the Tata Blackbird will be based on the China-spec Chery Tiggo 5X SUV that measures 4358mm in length, 1830mm in width and 1670mm in height. Similar to the new-breed Tata cars, the upcoming compact SUV is likely to be packed with several advanced features and mandatory safety features. 5. KIA TELLURIDE The new Kia Telluride is the brand’s largest and beefiest SUV that we wish to have in India. Based on Hyundai Palisade’ platform, the Telluride measures 5000mm in length, 2010mm in width and 1800mm in height. The ground clearance of 203mm makes it a perfect vehicle for the Indian roads. Globally, the SUV is being offered with a 3.8L V6 GDI petrol engine paired to an electrically controlled 8-speed automatic gearbox. The motor makes a top power of 292bhp and 355Nm of torque. It can be had either with the FWD system or AWD drivetrain system. The SUV has multiple driving modes including Snow, Sport, Smart, Eco and AWD lock. Similar to the Seltos, the Kia Telluride comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and UVO connected car technology along with several goodies.
