It’s not easy to capture images that make the subject go, "Hey, that looks exactly like me!" (As opposed to, "Oh God, is that what I really look like?" 😂) There is only one person who’s been able to consistently capture the essence of Tarzan, and turn that into images that show off… my brilliant brain, my intensity, my beautiful chaos, my weirdness and wildness, my queerness, my complexity, my joy and my sadness, my strength and my never-give-up-ness, my huge pulsing heart His name is Darius Bashar. He snapped this one on a whim, when I ran upstairs to change my earrings. [Tarzan with a big smile in a green sweater and blue jeans, standing behind a glass railing looking down at the camera below.] When I look at this photo, I see one hundred multitudes of Tarzan. I see all the sweat and sleepless nights it took to produce one genuine smile. I see a woman who fought hard for her joy. I’ve been lucky to find a photographer that can capture all of that. The first time he took my photo was in 2019, and this was our fifth photoshoot. He made [the most beautiful reel]( about our years of working together. Please, please watch it—if only to hear Darius’s delicious bass-y voice. Darius has taken over 800,000 photos of people all over the world and does an incredible street photography series on Instagram called [Taking Photos of Strangers](. [a black man with braided dreadlocks stands in the street in a casual black t-shirt and pants and an expensive looking watch on his wrist, his hands are clasped together and a big set of keys dangle from his pinky finger. he looks about 20 years old, confident and happy.]( I’ve cried dozens of times watching this series. Darius instinctively knows how to help people take photos that ACTUALLY LOOK and FEEL like their best selves, even when it’s someone he met for literally 30 seconds. He’s worked hard to get where he is, and he also has that thing that some people are just born with, I think. His work is an expression of who he is, so it’s no surprise that it is THAT beautiful. The last thing I bought online was Knix period panties…after only 87 years of seeing their ads!! Proving it only takes 34,934 touches to create a customer on the internet.
