apply for a spot in Email Stars ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ TL;DR Email Stars opens this coming Thursday and we’re now taking scholarship applications. [Apply here →]( ) Sandra forwarded me an email that made us both boiling mad. The subject line read "Why I’m banning Pakistan, Vietnam, Nigeria, and most of the Third World from my emails."* It went on to explain that those countries were messing with email deliverability. Since those subscribers only represented 5% of revenue, the writer had decided to purge them from his list. They would be allowed to get emails from him if they "just pay $10."** At first I was so mad, but very quickly it made me sad. Especially since, in a subsequent email, he quoted many of his subscribers who were being SO NICE TO HIM, asking him to please not do this. Ugh. It all just seemed so unfair. It reminded me about my own readers who live in places and under circumstances where $1000 is an impossible sum of money, for hundreds of reasons. We’re opening a digital edition of Email Stars next Thursday for six days. In past years our scholarship students have done INCREDIBLE things with Email Stars. I have the receipts. But it’s been almost a year since we’ve offered scholarships, and I’ve received several emails this year already asking if I’m bringing this back. Yes, we are bringing them back. Applications are open from today until Tuesday. If you don’t need one yourself (or you already took Email Stars) feel free to pass this link along to someone who might. [Here is the link to apply —>]( ) Thanks in advance for your interest in Email Stars, and your patience waiting for the opportunity to come back. I’ll be reviewing applications Wednesday morning and, if yours is selected, you’ll be notified same day. As a white person I have the luxury of being shocked by the kind of overt racism that showed up in that email. I also recognize that for a lot of people this kind of treatment makes up the fabric of their lives. It shouldn’t be this way, but here we are. It costs me very little to give away a digital program and if I could get it into the hands of someone who’s life might be improved with this knowledge, that would feel really good. Again, here’s [the application link]( ). Happy Friday 🎉 Tarzan *Sometimes words and phrases sound weird to me but I’m not sure why. I often consult the [Progressive’s Style Guide]( ) by Sum Of Us, which, in this case, led me to a helpful article about using "[third world]( )" as a descriptor. **Given that 80 percent of humanity lives on $10 or less a day (according to the World Bank), this phrasing strikes me as heavy with unacknowledged privilege. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
