Tormund Giantsbane says to me, a sly smile on his face. "A-MORE-itization," I say, suddenly flushing and remembering I donât know how to say that word. "Am, AH-mor, a-MORE,â¦" I stammer, before calling out triumphantly, "AMORTIZATION!" This time I remember to put the accent on the âam.â We laugh but truthfully I find it super embarrassing. Tormund and I come from quite different socioeconomic circumstances. Itâs a miracle I even know the word amortization. It should come as no surprise that I canât pronounce it. My Mennonite lineage features generations of financially helpless women who became subject to the rule of their own sons when those sons turned 16 years old.  Unspoken rules of my childhood included: We do not covet wealth.
We do not talk about money.
We do not desire worldly possessions (or anything other than being closer to Jesus). Iâm still learning how to talk about money, and hold intelligent conversations with people who have it and know things about it. I know very few things. I fumble constantly and worry that my financial illiteracy will be exposed (especially to Tormund Giantsbane, who is smart with money and whose opinion matters very much to me). As I revised our sales copy for Email Stars (opening June 9), I noticed that last year I removed almost all of the money claims, including the facts of my own businessâs profitability. I didnât want to overpromise.
I didnât want to mislead people about the work involved.
I didnât want to show up like a white-lady-Grant-Cardone. Itâs kind of tacky for white guys to talk about how much money they make. Of course, your company is thriving. [98% of VC funding goes to men](.
Of course, you are confident. Most people in power look and talk like you.
Of course, you are dominating the Forbes list. You had a head start. Please donât rub it in. We get it. But for women (and especially women of color)? Women need to talk about money. Openly and honestly, with people of all genders. We need women to talk about how much money their businesses made last month (while being honest about profit margins), to pay themselves first (before giving money to some coach who promises to help them 10x it), to not feel embarrassed if they canât pronounce the word "amortization" (or admit they had to Google what that even is). I am tired of seeing people get shredded for talking about how much money they make on the internet. (Except Grant Cardone. That guy can just sit down for a hot second. Take Tony Robbins with you, bro. Enjoy your supplements and real estate deals and leave the rest of us in peace. 😂) With this new fire lit in my female, ex-Mennonite heart, I added some of the numbers and figures back into the sales copy for Email Stars. This is how we make money, after all, and itâs why people sign up to learn from our programs. We canât talk about making money with emailâ¦without talking about making money, period. Still, it makes me a bit squirmy. Just like high-end clothing stores, ski resorts, LinkedIn, people with MBAs, airport business lounges, and the thought of meeting Tormundâs parents make my heart speed up a bit. There is a hot chance I will do something embarrassing or be exposed. (Though you should know I have excellent table manners. I even use my fork upside down, the fancy Jane Austen way.) One of my subscribers thought my emails about LinkedIn ([this one]( and [this one]( were some kind of play to bait new connections by playing up my discomfort on the platform. This is not a play for anything. It is merely calling to attention a generations-old position that wealth + power = a club to which we do not belong. Except I do belong. To this club. A club of brave people who are willing to have open and vulnerable conversations about how money changes hands, what weâre willing and not willing to do in the name of profit, and who gets to walk in the halls of wealth and power.
