When my friend Rhiannon introduced me to this expression I said, âWow, thatâs an actual thing? I thought I invented it!â Iâm famous for exiting parties, conversations and all forms of social gatherings from which I no longer wish to participate. And I expect the same treatment from others! Iâd rather someone excuse themselves to go to the bathroom and never come back than suffer through a conversation with me that they donât find interesting. The cool thing about email is that the socially acceptable way to leave is a French exit. No need to explain why! Although let me tell you we have a large collection of emails from subscribers telling us in no uncertain terms what is wrong with the emails I write and why they will no longer be reading them. The tone is usually quite huffy and the feedback is rarely valuable, but I get a kick out of them. I often remind my students that great writing is sometimes polarizing. Those who love it will lean in closer and want to hear more. Those who donât are going to be looking for the nearest exit. Sometimes they might even flip you the bird on the way out. (I doubt the French do that!) Thatâs how you know youâre onto something. To be clear, Iâm not saying you should write controversial copy just to get people riled up. Itâs about speaking what is real and true for you, unapologetically. Authentic writing takes a mountain of strength and courage, whether youâre writing about problems in your industry - and there are some major issues Iâll be tackling in [tomorrowâs masterclass]( or just having the courage to say, âIâm going through a separation and life is really hard right now.â Personally, I am not interested in reading any other kind of writing but that. Does it mean you have to splash your personal life all over your email marketing the way I do? Not at all. I just happen to be a showoff-y kind of person who draws most of her inspiration from life. But you donât have to do that if you donât want to. You can tell your customersâ stories (with permission, obvs) You can share an opinion or ideaâas my OBM Sandra Booker said, âPeople who agree feel seen, people who donât have something to contemplateâ You can talk about something you love, like your favourite project management software or your grandmaâs baked bean recipe Please forward it to me if itâs the latter; I love baked beans! Point is, great writing is great because it makes people feel something. Your customers want to buy from people and companies they like and feel connected to. For example, I enjoy buying mushroom products from Four Sigmatic because their company has a fun personality that jives with mine. I prefer buying apples from the orchard down the road because I get to shake the hand of the guy who picked them, and heâs pretty cool. Also, they taste better.  Just like your copy will when you infuse it with humanity and feeling.
