morning at 5am I settle into a meditation cushion in the pitch black of my attic office. I fold my legs into a vague approximation of lotus position and pray for Jeff Bezos, that he will remember his humanity and start treating his employees like their lives matter. [Tarzan is wearing a floral onesie while sitting on the floor of her office and her tongue out]( But letâs back up a second. I have this weird relationship with prayer (obviously). Children of preachers are weird like that. My dad never really set an example of how to authentically pray. It was mostly, "Please Jesus, save all the heathens from eternal damnation. May they come to see that our beliefs are the right beliefs." As I got older my prayers got less judgmental and at the same time a thousand percent more selfish. "Dear God, make these love handles go away without me having to exercise." "Have mercy on me and make that smart, sexy guy call me back. " And of course the old standby: "Lord Jesus, please bring me lots of money." Now that I have the money, the sexy guys almost always call me back, and Iâve learned to love all the fleshiest, most grabbable parts of my bodyâitâs easy to condemn those selfish prayers and talk about how committed I am to praying for the betterment of Amazon warehouse workers. ...but of course, I only started thinking about stuff like that when my base needs were met. Just like my company didnât have a mission and values until it had made several million dollars in revenue. I was too busy trying to survive another day. I see a lot of critiques about language like "your first 6-figure year" or "another 7-figure launch" - and Iâve dished out enough of it myself. We should find more meaningful goals! We should stop setting arbitrary sales targets as though they mean something. A hundred thousand dollars is not the same in New York City as it is in Choctaw, Oklahoma. We should talk about this problem! But also⦠I see my five years ago self piping up from the back of the room, "Stop judging my goals! That money would mean so much to me. Can you just let me make some money so I can decide for myself whatâs meaningful and whatâs not?!" I love five-years-ago-Tarzan. She is so much more humble than I am. For many people who are at that stage of business, numbers like "one hundred thousand dollars" sound pretty damn appealing, even knowing you only get to keep some of it. If thatâs you, then allow me to introduce myself: Hi! 👋🏼 Iâm Tarzan and making 6 figures is a totally decent and respectable goal. If I could offer you some advice, writing a great copy is one of the most fundamental skills youâll need in the beginning. If you can convince one person to sign up to your email list straight off of their first visit to your website, youâre a big step closer to that juicy hundred thousand dollar goal. The words you use to talk about your business and sell your products are always important, and maybe a little bit extra important when itâs the difference between paying yourself an actual salary this month or going back to a full-time job you donât really like.
