couple weeks ago Vanessa and I drove up to Toronto for a photoshoot with [Darius Bashar]( who is my #1 favourite photographer that I’ve ever worked with. Being the space cadet I often am, without my assistant to tether me and remind me of my earthly responsibilities, I forgot my garment bag with all my outfit changes. I drove up to Toronto with a laundry basket full of jewelry, belts and accessories, and a single pair of jeans to change into. Darius met me at my car, and watched me open my car door excitedly, only to find it curiously empty of all the things we would need to get a variety of shots. "Okay, so...do you need to reschedule?" he asked me. There was no way I was rescheduling. I braved the highway for this and there was no turning back now. That ended up being my favourite shoot to date - with the possible exception of this latest shoot. It only got better this third time. (Take note if you’ve just done your first photoshoot and the photos don’t really feel 100% you. As with copywriting, discovering that "sounds like me" factor takes time and experimentation - and also chemistry if you’re working with a copywriter.) We sent each other simultaneous voice notes the next day, professing our deep love and appreciation for each other. Darius has a unique process. He spends a lot of time getting to know his clients. I’ve never felt so seen by any photographer. I’ve never met someone who can give me exactly the direction I need, and who keeps evolving with me as my business evolves. He tells me when it’s time to close my eyes and feel the music. He knows when to turn the fan on and create exactly the right amount of movement in my dress. He knows when to crack a joke, and how to catch the biggest laughs. When I look at the photos Darius takes, I see a beautiful woman. Perhaps more importantly, I see myself. That’s a quality I hope to replicate when [I teach students how to write](. So that, when you read your words - whether it’s an email, an IG caption or something else - you can see your business (and/or yourself!) represented in a way that is authentic and beautiful. It isn’t an easy task, and it takes a ton of effort to get to that place, but I believe it’s possible to get to that place if your desire is strong enough. Like everything in business, it takes time. I don’t even have the images yet and I’m already certain that this third shoot is far beyond anything Darius and I have ever created together. We blew past just being a photographer and his subject, and became two artists creating something beautiful together. No matter what the outcome, doing that work is rewarding in and of itself <--- another key takeaway I dream of for my copywriting students.
