Iâm racing down the highway at 130km/hour - 30km over the speed limit, but just 10km over the speed everyone else is driving. Itâs a sunny and clear day. Iâm tempted to crack a window, and I have to remind myself that itâs February. Iâve just come from my monthly dental appointment. [Tarzan sitting in a dentist chair with a contraption in her mouth to expose all of her teeth]( The Invisalign tech left the room for about 37 seconds, and I took the opportunity to scan my to-do list. Even though Iâm not at my desk, Iâm already stressed out about all the things that Asana is telling me are due today. In a flash of understanding, possibly brought on by the fact that I didn't eat breakfast and Iâm running solely on coffee, it suddenly occurs to me, this 3-day workweek thing is really not working. Iâm behind on my deadlines 100% of the time. There is zero space for unexpected setbacks and almost zero chance weâll launch Copy Caboose on time if I donât change something. Going from my usual 4-day workweek to 3 days was supposed to give me an extra day with my kids and my husband an extra day for himself, but the way itâs panned out is that Iâm perpetually exhausted. I come downstairs at 5:30pm, immediately change into what is now known as my "relaxing gown," sink into a cushy bar chair, and try to make myself invisible. [Tarzan sitting on her office couch wearing her ultra comfy and relaxed "post work gown"]( Iâm there, but Iâm not really there. This is a throwback to 2019, when I was barely ever present with anyone. All I could think about was business. You might have thought you were having a conversation with me, but I was only ever half listening. I called my BFF, who is also my coach, a person who often seems to know things about me before I do. "OMG, I just realized this! The 3-day workweek thing is a failed experiment. Iâm so done," I tell her. "Yeah, I was just telling that to Tae last week," she says. (Thatâs her husband). My husband was even less surprised. It was like heâd been keeping his calendar loosely blocked for me, knowing we were headed here anyway. Iâm telling you this because a lot of the time, people make being a business owner sound better than it is. The reason I was even able to experiment with a 3-day workweek - while still producing new offers and making enough revenue to keep the lights on - is because I have a team of 3 people supporting me. I did a podcast interview last week with Deepshikha Sairam of [How To Womxn]( (itâll be live in a few weeks, but in the meantime, check out her other episodes), and she just lit up talking about my 3-day workweek and how exciting that was. I realized an update was in order. I donât do the 3-day-workweek thing anymore. It worked for a couple of months. And then it just sort of stopped being viable. Three days is enough for coasting and continuing to do the things weâre already doing, but itâs not enough if I want to create new products, take new trainings, be present on social, say "yes" to unexpected opportunities, go to breathwork class once a week, and, most importantly, work with some level of peace. So Iâm back to four days a week. Initially, it felt lush and spacious, but Iâve found myself filling up all that extra space fast. I have to keep reminding myself not to make doing business all about the destination and to really be here for the journey, which is one of my company's core values, one that we read as a team every single week. It goes like this: We respect the journey. We honour the highs and the lows, and understand that HOW we meet our goals matters more than WHEN. Right now, respecting the journey means working four days a week. It might not always be that way, but itâs whatâs working right now. And I thought Iâd better make sure Iâm real clear about that, so no one is wondering, "Gosh, how does Tarzan do it all while working so few hours?" If thereâs a way to run this kind of business on 21 hours a week, I havenât found it yet. And thatâs the truth. xo,
