We fought a hard race, and it showed in our widespread support — for example, our campaign is the only one to earn more than 20% of the in-person vote in every assembly district of Manhattan. But with the majority of absentee and affidavit votes now counted, it has become clear that we cannot overcome the vote margin we need to win, and we expect to come in second by a few percentage points. I remain immensely proud of what we accomplished over this past year. Together, we insisted that safety is the precondition of opportunity and a good life, and that our recovery from this brutal year depends on it. We raised awareness about some of the city’s toughest problems, looked them in the eye, and offered real, concrete solutions that I hope will come to life. We also insisted that every person working in the criminal justice system, including prosecutors, must confront and correct the deeply embedded race, gender, and income biases in our country. I will be forever grateful to the dedicated members of Team Tali like you, everyone. You brought our shared vision to life with every call made, door knocked, dollar donated, and word of support. Running for office is not easy, but it was a real joy and privilege for me — a joy and privilege amplified by your enthusiasm, your encouragement, and your example. All of us need some time to regroup (my daughters included!), but I hope that after some rest we will all get back to fighting for the issues we elevated in this campaign. To those of you who told me this was the first time you were moved to engage in local politics, I urge you to continue to advocate for your communities and hold accountable the elected officials who affect your families’ daily lives. I also want to thank the legion of women who had the courage to share with me their experiences with crime and hope for a criminal justice system that sees and treats them differently; you inspired and shaped the vision of this campaign, and I will always stand with you. I also heard a demand for more women in political leadership, and I hope others will heed that call, too. Earlier today, I spoke with Alvin Bragg and congratulated him on his historic election as Manhattan’s first Black District Attorney. We had important disagreements throughout the campaign, but I am confident in Alvin’s commitment to justice, and I stand ready to support him. I wish him and the women and men who serve in the District Attorney’s office every success. Thank you again for your unwavering support. It’s been the honor of a lifetime to run to serve the people of Manhattan with the support of all of you.
