Although I've lived in California essentially all my adult life, I grew up in New England and it still shows sometimes. What does that look like? Well, I probably put maple syrup on more things than you do (and hot sauce on fewer). After nearly 30 years in the land of valley girls, my vowels still sometimes confuse people, and I am prone to dropping words into sentences that make my friends think I'm playing Mad Libs. (Ask me for driving directions and you are likely to have to figure out what a rotary, interstate, and a turnpike* are.) But how I really know I'm still in touch with my roots is that at this time of year, I am overcome with an intense need to find [autumn foliage.]( Fall without falling leaves is almost unthinkable to me, and I've learned over the years where to find Japanese maple-lined residential streets, and stands of gingkoes that give me a hit of New England color.
