It’s a difficult decision because on one hand, my kitchen is perfectly functional. It has a dishwasher that goes, there’s adequate storage, and the benchtop is a not-unattractive rimu. On the other hand, it’s dated, at least 30 years old, two of the cupboard doors are hanging off their hinges, and the extraction fan sounds like a DC10 taking off. Most annoyingly, in its current configuration, there’s only room for a half-sized fridge. (I do have a full-size one, but it’s situated down the hall, through the bathroom, and in the laundry). The thing that might swing it is that the oven - which is many decades old - needs cleaning. I did it properly a year ago, I tried the [oven door hack]( a few weeks ago, but it’s kind of irretrievably blackened and dirty-looking. So, I’ve been inspired by [The Block NZ’s kitchen reveals]( this week. Tim and Arty won, with their stone-effect, large-format tile splashback, white concrete benchtops, and clean mix of walnut timber veneer and white cabinetry. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I’m sure they won’t mind if I copy them more than just a little bit. My next step is finding the $19,953.05 they spent on the job.
