Sometimes they are fancy, architecturally designed and expensive; sometimes they are basic but perfect tiny homes; and often they’re somewhere in between. We often get the chance to peek when the houses are on the market. And that’s the case this week [with the home of real estate king Garth Barfoot and his wife Judy](. One of the striking things is just how long the couple have been at the Beach Haven property - since 1971. They could have afforded to move to any almost any other location, but they loved their neighbourhood, became involved in the community, and never seriously gave moving any thought, at least until Garth, in his 80s, [convinced his wife to move]( to a retirement home. I actually can’t count up how many houses I’ve lived in since 1971, but it’s more than a dozen. My total may be unusual, but it’s not that unusual for Kiwis: Houses in New Zealand are sold every five-and-a-half years on average (and that doesn’t take into account people who are renting). I can only imagine the process for moving and downsizing after 53 years in one place. The Barfoots have my respect.
