Every once in a while, I love to search through Reddit for terrible business advice. Why? Because it’s a guilty pleasure of mine. Do I need any other reason? 😅 Today, however, I found some really great advice that I wanted to pass on to you because it supports both starting a business and growing the one you already have. Additionally, its delivery was refreshingly simple and completely new to me. Let’s talk about it and get unstuck… QUOTE OF THE WEEK “Diversity is a flower that blooms with greater beauty and greater strength each time it is cross-pollinated.” ― K. Ancrum, The Weight of the Stars THE STORY ​ The Reddit post I found [here]() starts with the following headline: “I currently run four successful online businesses. I am very frustrated about all the generic advice and bull**** courses out there. Here's the only advice you need.” This is a great headline, one that definitely caught my attention. According to the post author, you only need to do two things to become a successful online business owner: - Pick an industry or niche, and master it. - Target an intersection of two industries or niches. That’s it. We all know how important it is to pick an industry. The riches are in the niches, as you often hear me say. Mastering means going deep, and that’s important for researching both who you’re serving and how to serve them. What are their pains and problems? What are their dreams and desires? What other products are they already buying? Those questions allow you to go deeper, and you should always dig as far as you can. It’s the second point, however, that really stood out to me: “Target an intersection of two industries or niches.” Here’s a clear example from the author: “Let's say you can build websites relatively well. You're also interested in cars. As we're all aware, the web design industry is **extremely** competitive. And what do cars have to do with web design? Instead of entering the web design field, enter the web design field targeting automotive dealers and mechanic shops. Build a few fake demo websites for auto mechanics, and then cold call auto mechanic shops with poor websites and offer them their services. Capture the vertical.” To me, this is another form of niching down, but saying it’s an intersection of two industries gives this a lot more meaning and opportunity. If you are a dog trainer, perhaps you’re a dog trainer for travelers. If you specialize in business strategy, perhaps it’s business strategy for authors. If you help run ads for companies, perhaps you specialize in running ads for new startups. From my perspective, even if you don’t plan to offer products or services specific to that niche, understanding how your work crosses over is an amazing way to help promote your brand. For example, let’s say you’re in financial planning. Take a moment to specifically target newlyweds. Develop resources such as mini guides and lead magnets tailored to this demographic. Appear on wedding-related or family-related podcasts because chances are they aren’t offering any advice about finances— an aspect of marriage that can be overlooked. You can continue offering the same services or products, but by focusing on this intersection, even for a brief period of time, you can establish yourself as the go-to person in that particular industry for what you have to offer. You’ll be surprised by how well this works, especially when being a guest on other podcasts. Also, there are some great conversations in the Reddit thread. I think it’s a great reminder for fostering business growth, especially for those just starting out or experiencing a plateau.
