We'd love to hear your thoughts! [Share your testimonial with us](), and you could be showcased on our brand-new website! Your support means the world to us — thank you! Hi, it's Pat! Within 24 hours of the Apple Vision PRO release, several prominent content creators published videos about their experience with this revolutionary product. Casey Neistat had one: As did Marques Brownlee, naturally: These are big YouTubers, so it’s no surprise they rack up millions of views within a day when talking about the next big thing. And that is exactly why you need to be talking about these things too. It’s called newsjacking, a concept that’s not new but one that’s been amplified by Apple’s recent launch. It’s a strategy we need to talk about, especially if your content has been plateauing for a while. Let’s get off of that plateau — let’s get unstuck. QUOTE OF THE WEEK “The trend is your friend.” — Martin Zweig THE STORY Newsjacking is the practice of capitalizing on the popularity of a news story to amplify your own marketing and brand message. When done right, you will gain more attention than usual. For example, during Superbowl XLVII in 2013, a sudden blackout occurred in the stadium while millions of people were watching. Then suddenly, this appeared on Twitter: This is one of the best examples of newsjacking, happening just seconds after a widely discussed event occurred. Needless to say, it went viral immediately. When a big event happens, being quick is important. However, you don’t have to be the first to respond or respond within seconds. When the Vision Pro launched, I saw constant content about it for three to four days — by well-known YouTubers and smaller creators. I discovered creators who I wouldn’t have found otherwise because I was already watching Vision PRO videos from others. This is why newsjacking works, especially on platforms (like YouTube and X) that rely heavily on the content everyone is already consuming. YouTube Algorithm: Pat has watched two videos about Apple Vision PRO, let’s feed him more from smaller creators and see what he clicks. As long as he keeps watching, we’ll keep supplying. Take this channel, Gravel. It has only 3k subscribers. Notice how their video about traveling with the Vision PRO performed compared to the previously published videos: Forty-seven thousand views in 15 hours for a small channel like this is huge. It’s attracting new viewers who might not have discovered it otherwise — a prime example of successful newsjacking. Then there’s Your Average Tech Bro. Another relatively smaller channel that saw a bump in views by newsjacking the Apple Vision Pro: And the views aren’t just coming to those who can afford and have access to the product. several channels are benefiting from newsjacking without having the product themselves, like CrazyOnesTechNews: Their latest video's 182 views per hour (VPH) is incredible for a small channel with less than 3k subs. (Note, I’m able to see the VPH thanks to the vidIQ Chrome Extension.) I can share many more examples, but I think you get the point. When something big happens, ask yourself: “How might I incorporate this into my content?” For some niches, the opportunities become fairly obvious. When Johnny Depp and Amber Heard went to trial in 2022, Emily D. Baker, a YouTuber and attorney, decided to go live on YouTube to cover the trial as it was happening. At times, she had over 50,000 concurrent viewers! (Emily and I discuss how this unfolded in [session 621](=) of the SPI Podcast, in case you’d like to get the inside scoop.) When there’s big news, step up to the plate to create something related to it. But here’s the most important part: When creating content about significant news, make it relevant to your audience. Don’t just talk about “the thing” because it’s popular, discuss why it matters and how it’s relevant to your subscribers. For example, the Gravel channel I mentioned earlier is a travel-based YouTube channel. Their video about airplane travel with the Apple Vision PRO made perfect sense and likely attracted many new subscribers. Keep your ears and eyes open, and once you start to get a sense that something’s about to make waves, find a unique angle to discuss it and gain the benefit of newsjacking at the same time.
