It all started with one video. Four hours later, I found myself reading a PDF file I downloaded from the brand. Here’s the kicker—I wasn’t even actively looking for any of this information. Today, I want to share a new YouTube channel I discovered, one that’s not terribly huge (73k subscribers). It’s not an over-the-top channel with a ton of editing or giant sets that require a lot of money. From a creator’s perspective, I found it super refreshing. I often pay attention to what draws me in so I can learn from the experience. Today, I want to pass what I learned from this channel to you. Let’s get unstuck… QUOTE OF THE WEEK “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” – Leonardo da Vinci THE STORY I was on my YouTube homepage when I saw this title and thumbnail combo: I had never looked up any information about songwriting before, so this was purely a random occurrence. (Although perhaps the connection was a search a few weeks ago about playing the piano.) Anyway, all I know is that this captured my attention, not because of “Crazy Easy” in the title (which is usually a turn off for me) but because of “The Flip Method.” What is this “Flip Method” and how does it work? Do Taylor Swift and John Legend use this method too? Dang… I had to find out. *CLICK* Notice the thumbnail. Taylor Swift is a bit of a cheat code because she’s one of the most recognizable artists in the world, but just adding her isn’t going to get clicks—it’s the curiosity factor along with the title and “The Flip Method” that makes it work. The thumbnail isn’t too crowded or noisy, either. It doesn’t try to answer the question of what this method is or even provide any clues. I literally have to click to find out. And then there’s the intro. The video doesn’t start by immediately introducing the Flip Method or even explaining what we’re going to learn. Instead, it begins as if we’re already well into a lesson with zero time to hesitate and question if this is worth our time. They use a really good formula for the intro as well: - Introduce a Familiar Thing - Examples of the Familiar Thing - Why the Familiar Thing is a Problem - How to Solve the Problem To be more specific, they introduce the concept of cliches and how they’re a great shortcut to meaning and understanding. Then they share some quick examples that we’ve all heard before, like “the view is breathtaking,” “dead tired,” and “my heart is broken.” And then they introduce the problem, which sets up the entire video: “... the problem with cliches is if we use them without changing anything, they sound dull, boring, and lazy.” Which, of course, is the opposite of what you want when writing a song. “In this video, we’re going to show you the Flip Method and guide you through six different strategies for flipping cliches into some of the best lyrics you’ll ever write.” What a hook! After that, they dive right into the first strategy. Editing-wise, there’s some b-roll and voiceover in the beginning, which adds some movement to hold engagement during the first 30 seconds. But after that, they’ve earned the watch time, and it’s easy to stick all the way through their examples—including, yes, Taylor Swift and John Legend, thus fulfilling the promise of the thumbnail. It’s not clickbait if you follow through. Finally, let’s talk about the PDF file. Yes, they have a lead magnet to grow their email list, and it’s presented in a very organic way in the video. In the middle of the presentation, and again at the end, they have a call to action to download the PDF file containing all six Flip Methods (plus more resources), making it easy for the viewer to download and use the methods presented. Easy, relevant, and (I’m sure) effective. Also, bonus points for using ConvertKit, which was awesome to see! To finish off the video, they have a CTA to click to another playlist with more goodies to help me as a songwriter because I guess now I am one—or at least an aspiring one. 😊 Big shout out to the How to Write Songs YouTube channel and brand—they’re doing a lot right! I personally do not know the creators, Keppie and Ben, who reside in Australia, but if you’d like to watch the video that captured my attention, [you can watch it here.](=) I hope this breakdown was helpful!
