Last week I was in Dallas for VidSummit (a conference for YouTubers). While I was there, I used a very simple trick that made it one of the most valuable events Iâve ever attended. We all know how important it is to surround ourselves with like-minded people. However, itâs one thing to exist in the same space and another to actually benefit from it. Pay attention, because this little thing can lead to big results and help you get your money's worth when attending conferences like this. QUOTE OF THE WEEK "When we feel weak, we drop our heads on the shoulders of others. Don't get mad when someone does that. Be honored. For that person trusted you enough to, even if subtly, ask you for help." â Lori Goodwin THE STORY Early in my entrepreneurial career, I knew that going to industry events was important. In 2010, I attended my first conference, Blog World Expo. Within a year, I attended four other industry events, and one thing soon became very clear: going to events didnât always translate to growth in my business, and in many cases it became a distraction. I needed at least two to three days after coming home to recover, and Iâd usually find myself back to where I was before the event, sometimes even a little behind. Donât get me wrong â I met amazing people, had a lot of fun, and expanded my network, which was huge in the long-run. But not having a gameplan really kept me from getting the most out of my time there. We spend money to attend these events, taking time away from our families and home lives in the process, so itâs essential to have a directed approach. To make this simple, Iâve developed an easy, two-step strategy: STEP 1: I identify my businessâs most important needs. You likely have a lot on your plate, but before attending an event, think about whatâs at the top of that list. For example, I had two priorities at VidSummit for my Deep Pocket Monster YouTube channel: - Find support for designing YouTube thumbnails.
- Get advice for building out a physical studio. STEP 2: When having conversations with people, I always end with this⦠âDo you happen to know anyone here who (insert goals from step #1)?â This trick works like magic. The worst thing that can happen is they say no â the best thing is they say yes and introduce you to that person. Even if this only works once, itâs worth it. Iâve found that people are extremely happy and excited to help out when they know someone. I know I find joy when I can make a connection for others, and youâll be surprised how many people are there for you â you just have to put in the ask first. And of course, this trick applies not only in-person but also on virtual calls or even direct messaging. Try it out, you wonât be disappointed. You have so much to gain and so very little to lose with this. And yes, I did find a thumbnail person (several, in fact), and I got some amazing tips from at least a dozen people with their own video studios. I donât go to events as often as I used to, so itâs imperative that I get the most out of them â this is exactly how I do it. SPONSORED CONTENT =
