My favorite marketing style is all about providing amazing experiences for the people within your brand. I call this inside-out marketing because an audience of any size can become your top growth factor and help spread the word about your brand. I wrote about how to do this in my book, [Superfans]() (affiliate link), but it begs the question: How do you get in front of an audience to begin with? If you’re stuck, growth-wise, and want to know about inside-out marketing, then I’ve got you covered. All you need to know are two words, which I’ll reveal for you in this newsletter. QUOTE OF THE WEEK “Growth is an aftereffect of strong product/market fit and great distribution.” ― Andrew Chen THE STORY My podcaster friend Josephine was struggling because she was spending over $3,500 a month with an agency that was repurposing her podcast into bite-sized video snippets. They then shared them on social media, everywhere from Twitter to TikTok. Needless to say, this strategy wasn’t working very well. Over the course of 6 months, her podcast wasn’t growing or profitable. I gave her two words that changed her mindset about everything: NEW Audiences. Emphasis on new. At first, I got a “well duh, Pat” reaction from Josephine, but then I asked her the following question: “Aren’t the people who follow you on social media people who already follow you?” She paused for a moment and then had a perfectly legitimate rebuttal: “Yes, but the point is to hopefully have those posts be shared and re-posted so that new people can find them, too.” An entire strategy based on hopefully is not a good sign. Then I replied with a final question that I already knew the answer to. However, if she had the answer, it would have a stronger impact. “How many of those podcast snippets in the last 6 months did what you were hoping for them to do?” You can probably guess what her response was—“little to none.” Now, posting podcast snippets on social media is not a terrible strategy, but it can be costly and time-consuming. However, if you’re looking to provide some value to those who are not likely to listen to an entire show, then this works. Some people only live on Instagram, and the only way to reach them is through Instagram, so little snippets can be great to stay top of mind and provide value. But growth comes from getting in front of new audiences. Not getting in front of the audience you already have, hoping they’ll share it with someone new. That’s a big ask that you can’t rely on, especially with algorithms on social media doing their thing. So what’s the answer here? How does one grow and get in front of new audiences? Here are some suggestions: #1. For Josephine, the answer was clear—guest podcasting. When you’re a guest on another podcast, you’re literally going to be placed in front of a new audience. Not only that, but the audience will also hear your story and your endorsement from the host of the show. And remember, you don’t need to have a podcast to be a guest on someone else’s. #2. Collaborations are great, especially if you’re a YouTuber. Be on each other’s channels and watch both audiences grow simultaneously. It’s a win-win. #3. Dive into a community on Facebook or LinkedIn in your niche, but not to promote your own stuff. Go and be the most helpful and valuable person in the room. Share things that others aren’t, and let people see how you do what you do. In time, you’ll naturally attract new people who want to learn more from you. #4. Email newsletter swaps have picked up steam as well. This is when you and a colleague mention each other in your respective newsletters. To take this one step further, check out ConvertKit’s new creator network, which allows other entrepreneurs to automatically recommend your newsletter to their new subscribers. (It has accounted for thousands of additional subscribers for this very newsletter!) CALL TO ACTION The most important thing is to find ways to get creative. Don’t just get in front of another audience—serve them. Whether it’s a guest podcasting spot or a community you want to show up in, serve first and you can’t lose.
