If so, it would be extremely helpful if you could spare a couple of minutes to answer this survey. [Click here to take the survey, and you might get featured in my new book!](â Hi, It's Pat! A student of mine recently asked me, âPat, how would you define PERFECT content?â My response? âDonât strive for perfection, strive for progress. Create something thatâs more valuable for your audience than the last thing you published.â Apparently, this wasnât good enough, so he immediately fired back with: âOkay, but if you had a formula for creating perfect content, what would that look like?â It seems like weâre always looking for the perfect formula for everything, but more often than not, there isnât one. However, there is a perfect formula for content, and Iâm about to share it with you. Letâs get unstuck⦠QUOTE OF THE WEEK âSuccess is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.â â Albert Schweitzer THE STORY After over 2,000 podcast episodes, 1,500+ blog posts, and nearly 1,000 videos published since I began creating content in 2008, I have learned quite a bit about what works and what doesnât. Here are my 5 rules for creating perfect content. Perfect content⦠#1 Speaks the same language as your target audience No matter what platform you create content on, you must speak the same language your target audience uses. No, I donât mean if they speak English, then you should too (I mean, thatâs kind of a given). Instead, you must familiarize yourself with the words your audience uses to describe their problems. You need to use the same kind of language that your audience uses to express their hopes, wishes, and dreams. You need to name and describe the obstacles, challenges, demons, and doubts better than your target audience does. As Jay Abraham once said, âIf you can define the problem better than your target customer, they will automatically assume you have the solution.â #2 Evokes an emotion Information is freely available everywhere, so the only way to connect with your audience through your content is to evoke some kind of emotion. Whether you make a person laugh, cry, get angry, feel joyâwhatever the emotion isâthatâs when you know youâve made an impression worth talking about and remembering. The best way to evoke emotion is to learn to tell a great story, one that follows the next rule⦠#3 Relates to your audience When your audience sees that you have gone through what they are going through, you become more believable and relatable. Too often, I see content creators separating themselves from their audience by overloading their audience with information. The more you can show that you were once in the trenches too (or still there with them), the more likely you are to create content that evokes emotion. #4 Vision casts Great content inspires a future thatâs exciting. You have the ability to paint a picture of what that future may look like for your reader, listener, or viewer. Describing a desired future, and explaining how youâll help them get there, earns you a subscriber and creates a strong rapport. Besides your own journey, sharing how others in your community fought metaphorical dragons to get to the other side can be even more powerful for vision casting. #5 Engages Getting a person to consume your content is a waste if they take zero action. Itâs also a disservice to your audience. No, you canât get everyone to take action, but we can definitely all do a better job of getting a person to engage. What are the first steps and how do we make them doable? Thatâs the question we need to answer for our audience. CALL TO ACTION Speaking of a call to action, try using these rules as a guide for your next piece of content: S: Speak the same language E: Evoke emotion R: Relate V: Vision cast E: Engage And finally, as always, SERVE.
