Noah Kagan is an entrepreneur known for several achievements: - He was Facebookâs 30th employee (although he was fired shortly thereafter).
- He is the founder of AppSumo and several other online businesses.
- Heâs a YouTuber who asks people with large homes or fancy yachts about what they do for a living. But beyond all that, heâs an amazing friend â he also has an interesting story about how he was hired by Mint. The lesson within the story is not only surprising⦠I followed the same advice, and it worked! And it may work for you too. Letâs get into it, and letâs get unstuck. QUOTE OF THE WEEK âEverybody leads in different ways but the best captains lead by example.ââ
â James Ward-Prowse THE STORY In 2007, a personal finance software company called Mint.com came onto the scene. Noah saw what they were doing, loved it, and wanted to work for them. â At this point, many people would do one of two things: - Move on to something else.
- Hustle and learn marketing somewhere else, come back, and reapply. But not Noah. No. Noah is programmed differently. He chose option #3: just to show Mint that he was the right hire. â Show âem. Itâs that simple. Itâs not always easy, but itâs that simple. How I Followed Noah Kaganâs Example When I heard Noahâs story, I was inspired. I didnât go out and try to get hired by another company, but I did ask myself, âWhere in my life am I trying to prove my value to someone else?â In 2012, it was obvious to me: I wanted to speak at more events. The usual route for speakers on the circuit is to either be part of a speakersâ agency or apply directly. However, I wasnât part of an agency, and I knew that applying directly would be difficult since it was easy to get lost in the noise. Plus, my speaking experience was limited, putting me at a disadvantage. Show âem. Instead of taking the usual routes, I identified an event I wanted to speak at and created a completely new presentation tailored specifically for that audience, as though I were already addressing them. I knew some people who had attended this event in previous years, so I asked them what it was like, the types of talks they had attended, and which talks they enjoyed the most. After a month, I had a fully developed presentation that I knew would hold value for this specific audience (it was a blogging conference). I uploaded it to SlideShare and kept it private. Then, I reached out directly to the conference director via LinkedIn and email. I included a link to the presentation and pitched my talk. In less than a week, I received a direct invitation to speak at the event. It worked! I found out through our correspondence that itâs not uncommon for speakers at these events to not even have their slides ready until the week of the event. Having already thought about the audience, created a presentation, and reached out directly made a strong impression on the director. As a result, it was an easy decision for them to add me to their roster. Serve first! CALL TO ACTION Where, or to whom are you trying to add value, and how are you going to show them what you have to offer? When you take that extra step and create something specific, fine-tuned, and tailored to that person, organization, or audience, youâll find that theyâre more likely to pay attention and want to work with you. You got this!
