You know me, I love to time travel, and that’s exactly what we’re doing today! As I write this newsletter on June 7th, 2023, I’m about to drive to Anaheim, CA to host my big event for the Pokémon community, Card Party. There are 2000+ card collector nerds like me coming from all over the world, and all the planning and prep work comes down to this weekend. By the time you read this newsletter, however, it will be over. Done. Year one, in the history books, and year two . . . well that all depends on how well year one does. It could be a hit or it could be an absolute misfire, and you could probably check on social media right now to see what the consensus is. I’m nervous, I’m excited, and I want to throw up. But at the same time, I know this is the right direction. In this newsletter, we’re going to go back in time to discover why I know this is a worthwhile risk, and hopefully inspire you to take some risks, too. Let’s get unstuck. QUOTE OF THE WEEK "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." – H. Jackson Brown, Jr. THE STORY This feeling I have right now is not at all unfamiliar to me. The heavy feeling in my stomach, the curiosity about whether this is going to work out or not has appeared many times before in my life: - Deciding to start my own business after getting laid off. - Launching my podcast. - Starting my YouTube channel. - Writing and publishing my first book. - My second book. - My third book. - Getting on stage for the first time. - Delivering my first keynote address. - Launching my first online course. The list goes on and on, but over time, I’ve discovered something. . . That which truly challenges me, rewards me. Each of the challenges above were first met with incredible hesitation and worry. With each and every one, there’s always been something incredible on the other side — after I took action. That’s not to say everything worked out. In many cases, the action led to failure. But, that failure became a lesson, which in turn gave me direction. Today, I go toward those challenges. With anything, if it doesn’t make me even a little nervous — that’s when I’m actually the most scared. That means I’m not pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. Comfort zones are great, it’s important to feel comfortable, but in the areas of life where I want growth, I go toward the uncomfortable. With Team SPI, it was completely changing our business model last year to focus on [community]( rather than stand-alone courses. In the Pokémon world, it’s Card Party and having to coordinate 1000+ things to create a memorable experience for everyone. In my personal life, it’s the tough conversations that lead to better understanding and problem-solving. I’m not the first to discover the importance of embracing the challenge, obviously. My friend, Ryan Holiday, wrote an entire book about it called [The Obstacle is the Way]() [affiliate link]. I highly recommend it. In it, he says: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” No matter how this event turns out, I’m grateful for the nervousness: it means I care enough to give this thing my best effort. No matter the results of Card Party, I know this will be a learning experience for myself, my team, and the community at large. But I do hope to continue this event moving forward, to continually learn and make it even better over time. Wish me luck … No wait! The event has already happened. It’s my turn to wish you luck. 😉 You got this. CALL TO ACTION Bold actions yield bold results. Are you staying comfortable, or are you seeking out the discomfort knowing there’s growth and reward on the other end? The challenges inspire me and definitely get me excited, but there’s one final thing I want to pass on to you, something I have to continually remind myself about too — don’t forget to have fun. In planning this event for the past six months, I’ve been stressed and worried about everyone else, but I have to credit my team for continually reminding me: “Pat, don’t forget to have fun.” I needed that, and it’s likely you need that reminder, too. Don’t forget to have fun!
