Sure, it’s fun for playing around with, like asking it to write a haiku about pickles using only words that start with the letter H: Hearty harvest hails, Hideaway in herbal haze, Hushed, they hold their haze. …that’s deep. But for us content creators and marketers, ChatGPT doesn't only save time, it can also create and offer ideas we would never have thought of ourselves. In the story below, I share an idea that I’ve already used on stage in front of over a thousand people, and in a recent podcast episode listened to by tens of thousands, with nothing but good feedback. Guess what? It was all manufactured in ChatGPT. Today I’ll reveal how you can use ChatGPT to get great ideas too. Let's get unstuck. QUOTE OF THE WEEK "With great power comes great responsibility." – Uncle Ben, to young Peter Parker THE STORY In March, I was invited to deliver the closing keynote speech at Social Media Marketing World in San Diego. [Pat Flynn delivering the closing speech at Social Media Markketing World in San Diego.] My topic was Long-Form Video Marketing, something I’m very familiar with. However, my biggest challenge was this: eight other presentations at the event were about the opportunity and power of short-form video. We all know how popular platforms like TikTok, IG Reels, and YouTube Shorts are right now. To drive home my message that long-form video content is important, I needed to do two things: - Take a stance and claim that long-form video content is better (which is something I truly believe). - Find a way to make my thesis resonate with the audience. Enter ChatGPT. Here is a screenshot of the prompt I used: [A screenshot of the ChatGPT prompt Pat used for his speech.] (I accidentally wrote “what” instead of “write”, but ChatGPT still was able to understand what I was asking for — a strong metaphor.) Metaphors are one of the most powerful tools a creator can use to get a point across, and the five examples it gave me were great: - “Short-form videos are like snacks, while long-form videos are like a full meal.” - “Short-form videos are like a glimpse into someone’s life, while long-form videos are like a conversation with a friend.” - “Short-form videos are like highlights, while long-form videos are the full game.” - “Short-form videos are like a first date, while long-form videos are like a long-term relationship.” - “Short-form videos are like a snapshot, while long-form videos are like a portrait.” Some of these examples are better than others, but the one that stood out to me the most was the first one about snacks versus full meals. In ChatGPT’s explanation, it followed up with: “This metaphor compares short-form videos to small, bit-sized snacks that provide quick bursts of entertainment or information. Long-form videos, on the other hand, are like a full meal that provides a more immersive and satisfying experience.” This hit home, because like many, I’ve personally experienced swiping through TikTok for hours only to be left unsatisfied. Like a bag of chips, or some M&M’s, you just keep going until you either run out or get sick. This metaphor inspired me to get creative about how to support this with imagery. That’s when I came up with the idea that I don’t want to be the house handing out candy at Halloween, only to be forgotten about in a moment’s notice. I want to be the chef at a restaurant that people want to dine at and not only be satisfied, but come back again with some friends, too. When I shared this on stage, I saw so many head nods. I know my [podcast episode]( about the same topic resonated with people too because I received tons of private messages thanking me for it. Metaphor for the win, and I’m not ashamed to say that I didn’t come up with the idea myself. It was ChatGPT. CALL TO ACTION ChatGPT is a tool, and like any tool, it’s one that still has to be used correctly. Although I didn’t come up with the idea, I still gave it the prompt, selected the right choice, and followed through to figure out how to best share it on stage and in a podcast. Try using ChatGPT as a metaphor generator for your next piece of content. You could even use it on social media and see how your audience responds. Simply head to ChatGPT and ask. Give it some information for context, but that’s all you really have to do — keep asking until you find a metaphor that hits home.
