From the desk of Pat Flynn October 25, 2022
--------------------------------------------------------------- [Pat Flynn smiling, wearing a shirt that reads "Do a lot with a little"] â Hi there, itâs Pat. A recent series of videos I created on one of my YouTube channels, [Deep Pocket Monster](=), has seen more views than any videos Iâve ever created before. One video saw 1 million views in 6 days, and over 3.2 million in 1 month. Another saw 600k views in a week. And no, these are not 60 second YouTube Shortsâthese are full length videos. After finally picking my jaw up off the floor and realizing Iâm not in a dream, Iâve had some time to reflect on WHAT actually happened here. Although there are some clear data-driven factors that have accounted for this growth (which I will share), thereâs ONE really important thing that I did differently here than in any other video I created in my past which involves understanding one of the biggest limiting beliefs that I had that was holding me backâ¦but not anymore. Iâll show you what I mean. Letâs get unstuck. QUOTE OF THE WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------- âFeel the fear and do it anyway.â â Susan Jeffers THE STORY --------------------------------------------------------------- A few years ago, I went to a conference and was going to document the entire experience for a video. I wanted to capture everything between the Uber to the airport, to the Uber ride back home. With my camera (and [Switchpod]() in hand, batteries charged and SD card empty, I was ready to go, but when the Uber pulled up, I just couldnât hit the record button. Iâll wait until I get inside the car. While in the Uber, I had an intro prepared, but I was too scared to say anything in front of the driver. I didnât want to make them feel awkward. Iâll start when I get to the airport. While at the airport, I was going to film the intro but I was worried I would get in peopleâs way. Iâll film the intro later, plus the airport wasnât relevant to the event itself. While on the plane, I recorded the take off and landing out the window, but didnât dare record anything because I didnât want to disturb the people around me. Iâll film something when I get to the hotel. At the hotel, I was able to record something in the confines of my own room, but as soon as I went downstairs with my camera in hand to capture some interactions with other attendees, I just kept the camera at my side and never hit the record button. Maybe Iâll just record a summary after I get home. And thatâs exactly what I did. After editing the video, it just turned out dry. I had to explain everything without any video from the event to support, and more than being disappointed in the video, I was more disappointed in myself for not having the courage to just hit record out in public. Can you relate to this? Recording a video in public has been a HUGE struggle for me. I would always get in my own way, much too worried about what other people around me would think. But hereâs what I eventually found out. No one cares. In fact, a colleague told it to me straight one day when I was talking about this struggle with him: âPat, you arenât that important.â He wasnât trying to put me down or even say I was an unimportant person, but rather this was his way to just tell me straight that to those random people around us when we film, we just donât really matter. Weâre filming. So what? This is the mindset that helped me to get over my fear and truly understand that itâs actually not that bad, and the more that Iâve been practicing this, the more Iâve begun to really believe it. In fact, when filming in public, a lot of people get interested and curious, and now more than ever itâs becoming more commonplace to see. So what is there really to worry about?! The change doesnât happen overnight though, and you can take baby steps to get there. If youâve been struggling with the same thing, you have to practice yourself through the fear. Not avoid it or go around itâbut go through it. Also, thinking about this from a content perspective, videos are just so much better when thereâs an environment with energy and movement. They stand out. Not every shot has to be in the middle of a busy city or out in the middle of Yellowstone National Park, but simply changing your environment keeps your audience engaged. The videos Iâm publishing that are seeing record numbers are all videos that include me being out and about, and even interacting with real people, too. Every single one of them. I do ask permission when Iâm capturing any interactions just in case, and a few times people say no thanks, and thatâs that. No issue at all. Also, just be careful not to include anything in the background that you wouldnât want shown, like your house number or things like that. You can never be too careful, but you also donât want to just film from a closet all the time either. And just today, as I write this, I was going through the airport on my way to a team retreat and guess whatâI filmed, I captured, and no one said anything. Itâs awesome. Your Call to Action I challenge you to record one shot for a video (or if youâre bold, an entire video), outside of your normal recording environment. Even if itâs a video that will never be published, the practice of doing so will be hugely beneficial! If youâre in one of our communities (SPI Pro or Learner), feel free to share your video with the other members there. If not, and youâre comfortable, share your video on social media and be sure to tag me in it. Iâd love to see your video, but most of all Iâd love to see how youâre conquering your fears, too.
