A recent series of videos I created on one of my YouTube channels, [Deep Pocket Monster](=), has seen more views than any videos I’ve ever created before. One video saw 1 million views in 6 days, and over 3.2 million in 1 month. Another saw 600k views in a week. And no, these are not 60 second YouTube Shorts—these are full length videos. After finally picking my jaw up off the floor and realizing I’m not in a dream, I’ve had some time to reflect on WHAT actually happened here. Although there are some clear data-driven factors that have accounted for this growth (which I will share), there’s ONE really important thing that I did differently here than in any other video I created in my past which involves understanding one of the biggest limiting beliefs that I had that was holding me back…but not anymore. I’ll show you what I mean. Let’s get unstuck. QUOTE OF THE WEEK --------------------------------------------------------------- “Feel the fear and do it anyway.” — Susan Jeffers THE STORY --------------------------------------------------------------- A few years ago, I went to a conference and was going to document the entire experience for a video. I wanted to capture everything between the Uber to the airport, to the Uber ride back home. With my camera (and [Switchpod]() in hand, batteries charged and SD card empty, I was ready to go, but when the Uber pulled up, I just couldn’t hit the record button. I’ll wait until I get inside the car. While in the Uber, I had an intro prepared, but I was too scared to say anything in front of the driver. I didn’t want to make them feel awkward. I’ll start when I get to the airport. While at the airport, I was going to film the intro but I was worried I would get in people’s way. I’ll film the intro later, plus the airport wasn’t relevant to the event itself. While on the plane, I recorded the take off and landing out the window, but didn’t dare record anything because I didn’t want to disturb the people around me. I’ll film something when I get to the hotel. At the hotel, I was able to record something in the confines of my own room, but as soon as I went downstairs with my camera in hand to capture some interactions with other attendees, I just kept the camera at my side and never hit the record button. Maybe I’ll just record a summary after I get home. And that’s exactly what I did. After editing the video, it just turned out dry. I had to explain everything without any video from the event to support, and more than being disappointed in the video, I was more disappointed in myself for not having the courage to just hit record out in public. Can you relate to this? Recording a video in public has been a HUGE struggle for me. I would always get in my own way, much too worried about what other people around me would think. But here’s what I eventually found out. No one cares. In fact, a colleague told it to me straight one day when I was talking about this struggle with him: “Pat, you aren’t that important.” He wasn’t trying to put me down or even say I was an unimportant person, but rather this was his way to just tell me straight that to those random people around us when we film, we just don’t really matter. We’re filming. So what? This is the mindset that helped me to get over my fear and truly understand that it’s actually not that bad, and the more that I’ve been practicing this, the more I’ve begun to really believe it. In fact, when filming in public, a lot of people get interested and curious, and now more than ever it’s becoming more commonplace to see. So what is there really to worry about?! The change doesn’t happen overnight though, and you can take baby steps to get there. If you’ve been struggling with the same thing, you have to practice yourself through the fear. Not avoid it or go around it—but go through it. Also, thinking about this from a content perspective, videos are just so much better when there’s an environment with energy and movement. They stand out. Not every shot has to be in the middle of a busy city or out in the middle of Yellowstone National Park, but simply changing your environment keeps your audience engaged. The videos I’m publishing that are seeing record numbers are all videos that include me being out and about, and even interacting with real people, too. Every single one of them. I do ask permission when I’m capturing any interactions just in case, and a few times people say no thanks, and that’s that. No issue at all. Also, just be careful not to include anything in the background that you wouldn’t want shown, like your house number or things like that. You can never be too careful, but you also don’t want to just film from a closet all the time either. And just today, as I write this, I was going through the airport on my way to a team retreat and guess what—I filmed, I captured, and no one said anything. It’s awesome. Your Call to Action I challenge you to record one shot for a video (or if you’re bold, an entire video), outside of your normal recording environment. Even if it’s a video that will never be published, the practice of doing so will be hugely beneficial! If you’re in one of our communities (SPI Pro or Learner), feel free to share your video with the other members there. If not, and you’re comfortable, share your video on social media and be sure to tag me in it. I’d love to see your video, but most of all I’d love to see how you’re conquering your fears, too. Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
