Dear Reader, Even as economic activity has cooled amid inflationary pressures and tight monetary policy, the financial health of consumers and businesses remains strong. In a research note published by Goldman Sachs, analysts shared an insight that personal bankruptcy filing rates are at their lowest levels in decades. Similarly, S&P Global Market Intelligence found corporate bankruptcy activity in 2022 has been at its lowest level in at least 12 years. These are impressive stats. Recently, we learned that while consumer debt delinquencies ticked up in Q2, they continue to remain well below historical trends. This is because, in recent years, both consumers and businesses have been able to shore up their finances thanks to low-interest rates, limited opportunities to spend, and general financial prudence. Lenders have also been a lot more disciplined since the financial crisis. It certainly doesn’t hurt that businesses continue to invest in themselves at a growing rate, which has fueled hiring and kept layoffs low. It’s a narrative that becomes more bullish during difficult times, as it means these consumers and businesses have more capacity to service their financial obligations without going into outright financial distress. This is also good news for lenders, who have less bad debt to write down, which in turn means more capacity to lend. Taken together, this is good news for the economy, as consumers and businesses are helping to prevent any slowdown from becoming an economic calamity.
