Hello Reader, There's no doubt you've seen the headlines by now. Meta (formally Facebook) is not having a great week after suffering a 30% post-earnings crash yesterday. Historically, Investors have often viewed big-cap tech stocks such as Meta as options that are as safe as Treasury bills. But as yesterday proved, that's not always the case. Canaccord Genuity chief markets strategist Tony Dwyer had this to say about FAANG stocks stability. "Everybody went and thought that some of these mega-cap growth names were defensive. It's not proving out that way," Dwyer said on Yahoo Finance Live. So, what caused Meta's No good, very bad Thursday? On Wednesday, the company said it added just 2 million monthly active users in the quarter, barely moving the needle from the prior quarter. Daily active users fell by 1 million as Facebook saw increased competition from TikTok. The company missed analyst profit estimates by a whopping 14 cents. This Meta rout hints that investors may look at the FAANG complex differently moving forward. What are the takeaways? To begin with, it might be time to reevaluate if FAANG investments are the defensive assets that they were marketed as. Secondly, it is essential to remember that a well-balanced portfolio can help mitigate losses. I'm still bullish on FAANG stocks, even with Meta's implosion. Google and Apple (winners in the cloud and wearables) present the opportunity to diversify while still cashing in on the consistent success of technology company stocks.
