[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. It took until September but we finally had our first official 90-degree day in the Providence area. If you managed to stay inside you missed the furnace-like feeling of stale hot air. Consider yourself lucky. For many school districts the heat led to half days, for me it meant both of my kids and wife came home early. [P3] A picture from the top of Cranston municipal pool's bathhouse shows part of an estimated crowd of 2,500 who sought relief from hot weather in 1951. The Providence Journal files Unexpected changes to the school schedule aren't as easy to manage for everyone, however, so while the heat is the obvious reason for the closures, why aren't schools better prepared to handle these types of situations? The Journal's Amy Russo talked with the R.I. Department of Education to find out more about why they decided to take measures in Providence on Thursday and what they're doing to ensure kids will be OK as they return to hot school buildings today. (As you can see in the weather report below, it's still going to be hot and humid.) Will hot days become the new snow day?
