Also, how the ALS Association is following up on the Ice Bucket Challenge Good afternoon and welcome to This Just In. I'm Mike McDermott, managing editor of The Providence Journal. Summer is here, and while that's generally welcome news, the season has gotten off to a sad start in Rhode Island. A terrible tragedy unfolded in Warwick on Sunday, and continued to unfold Monday, when the body of a 10-year-old girl [was pulled from the water off Conimicut Point]( this afternoon. Yesterday, the body of a 35-year-old man who had attempted to rescue the girl was pulled from the same area. Two others, including the girl's uncle, were rescued on Sunday and remain in the hospital. In another tragic event, two men â [one from Woonsocket, and one from Senegal in West Africa]( â were shot and killed early Sunday morning in the Wanskuck section of Providence. Police said the shooting began with a fight inside a house that spilled into the street. This has been [a challenging year]( for many members of Rhode Island's General Assembly, and it's not just about the usual legislative fights. Elected officials in Rhode Island have been hit by a string of misfortunes: one was struck by a car, one had his house go up in flames, one suffered a near-fatal heart attack. And then there is Jeanine Calkin , the Warwick progressive who lost her leg due to an infection that led to blood clots. A real-estate holdings company owned by the chief of the Rhode Island DMV [has issued an eviction order]( after Cranston police alleged that a sex business was operating in one of its buildings. Walter "Bud" Craddock said he had no idea of any illicit activity taking place in the building, although police raided the same property four years ago. Seven years after [the Ice Bucket Challenge]( went viral online, the ALS Association has come up with another creative way to raise money for its fight against the killer known as Lou Gehrig's disease. [It's the CEO Soak]( and it aims at getting entire work organizations involved. In its first COVID data report of the week, the Rhode Island Department of Health reported no new coronavirus cases over the last three days. There were 46 additional cases since Friday, along with 10,880 negative tests, for a 0.4% positive rate. The number of COVID-positive hospital patients in Rhode Island fell to 29. The state has reported an average of 22 new cases a day over the last seven days, down 52% from two weeks ago. What's summer camp going to look like in Rhode Island? Not exactly like it did in years past, but camp directors say they hope they [can play a key role]( in helping children rebound from the impacts of the pandemic. A national organization has issued [a preliminary denial of accreditation]( to the state-run Eleanor Slater Hospital. Rebelle Artisan Bagels, which some say was home to the best bagels in Rhode Island, has closed its location on Doyle Street, [but the bagels themselves]( will continue to be available. Have a pleasant evening.
