It’s shocking, it’s racist, and it’s downright undemocratic. We have just over a week to ensure voters are protected in the November 8 midterm elections, so we’re running out of time to make a difference this year. But it’s not too late. New analysis from the Brennan Center for Justice finds that because of Texas' voter suppression law, “nonwhite voters” in the March primary were “at least 30 percent more likely to have an application or mail ballot rejected than white voters.” [Donate to END this kind of voter suppression →]( Of these ballot rejections, the overwhelming majority were due to the new ID number requirements imposed by S.B. 1. Importantly, this analysis shows that Latino, Asian, and Black voters were significantly more likely to have their mail ballot applications rejected than white voters. What’s more, even when voters successfully applied to vote by mail, voters of color were far more likely to have their mail ballots rejected. Altogether, this left nonwhite voters at least 30 percent more likely to have an application or mail ballot rejected than white voters.
