Don't Let Summer Heat and Travel Derail Your Training
Summer is my worst running season. To start, I hate heat. Whether it is because I grew up in Maine or just because I'm a wimp, as soon as the temps start climbing I start complaining. But I'm getting over it.
The turning point was to change my perspective from heat being something annoying that kept me from running fast and comfortably, to a [training element]( that will make me stronger and faster. I'm learning to put heat in the same category as hills, wind or speed: Variable stressors I can add to my training to enhance my fitness. It's amazing what I will embrace and endureâeven enjoyâif I think it is doing me good.
Racing is a different story: In a race, heat is a hindrance that produces slower times, no doubt about it. But everyone has the same hindrance, so it can also be reframed as one of the variables of the race, one that we can work to [minimize and master](.
Besides heat, summer sabotages training with distraction. The "lazy days of summer" are a myth. Summer, for me, tends to be jam-packed with activity, from mowing to little league games. Even vacations often threaten a training schedule and make it challenging to find [suitable running routes](. And, combining a [race with vacation travel]( has the danger of tainting both.
Enough whining though. It's summer! On the bright side, we get to peel off the winter layers and bask in the warm embrace of the seasonâif we're lucky, in remote and beautiful locations. We've compiled some articles to help you seize this summer and not only survive through heat and travel, but thrive. I'm hopeful this will be the summer that changes how I feel about summer running.
