Having grown up in Maine and lived the past 20 years on the high plains, I consider winter simply a [training tool to make me tougher](. But the frigid temps and relentless snows of the past week have tested the limits of my fortitude and driven me inside, where I'm grudgingly discovering I can get in surprisingly satisfying and, dare I say it, sometimes superior workouts. In addition to putting in [incline miles that are easy on my knees,]( my newest concession is the [indoor bike](, where I can steal extra minutes of aerobic training with less stress and without requiring 20 minutes of dressing time to get on all the protective layers. And, I can also get out of the saddle and crank out some intense intervals that [translate to running]( more than I expected. I'm still anxious to re-explore my favorite routes with my dogs as soon as the weather relents, but I probably am not going to abandon indoor workouts altogether even then. I may not be able to feel quite so tough after this winter, but I'm quite sure I'll be fitter come spring.
