And it's a time to recommit to defending and advancing equality — because we're at a frankly dangerous moment in our politics. Over one hundred bills have already been introduced in state legislatures this year that target the rights and livelihoods of LGBTQ+ individuals. Right-wing media outlets have been working overtime to demonize businesses and institutions that show solidarity with the LGTBQ+ community. We're seeing a downright alarming rise of homophobic and anti-trans rhetoric from "mainstream" politicians who are promising to pass even more restrictive laws. And it's only going to get worse. The Republican Party needs to gin up its base in advance of next year's presidential election — so that means it's time to go after some of their favorite punching bags. I'm disgusted by this, and I'm fighting every day to make it so that bigotry cannot be an accepted norm in American politics.
