From the earliest photographic records of human habitation to the latest aerial and digital imagery, from nearly uninhabited deserts and isolated mountainous territories to suburban sprawl and densely populated cities, this compilation offers an increasingly nuanced perspective on the American landscape. Divided by region, these photographs address ways in which different histories and traditions of land use have given rise to different cultural transitions: from the Midwestern prairies and agricultural traditions of the South, to the riverine systems in the Northeast, and the environmental challenges and riches of the far West. photo-eye Gallery is proud to announce the inclusion of gallery artist [Edward Ranney]( this publication. [Edward Ranney, Mission Remains, San Cristóbal Pueblo, Galisteo Basin, New Mexico, 2007, 12" x 18"]( This image, and others from Ranney's [Down Country]( is a local continuation of the artist's fascination with ancient stonework that has driven him to photograph across the world. In this recent work, Ranney began to photograph closer to his home in New Mexico, documenting the ways that colonial legacies have shaped the region. About this, the artist has said: Our own traces are visible to us, even if they're only fifty years old. It's a way of reading signs that we've left that acknowledges the bigger forces at work, [and] reflects what's involved with decay or change.
