After a lifetime on a chain, this "grumpy old man" of a dog seemed unlikely to find a home. Until one day, a miracle happened. Blackie found his perfect match [View this email in your browser]( Dear Friend, The shelters we support never give up on a pet — even a harder-to-place dog like Blackie. Blackie had lived his entire life outside on a chain before his owner surrendered the chow chow to Protectice Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Missouri. Blackie was 11 years old; his fur was so matted that it had torn from his skin in places and would never fully grow back. He needed to be shaved down completely to remove the mats. He also had trouble walking due to arthritis and a torn ACL that had never been treated. PAWS started him on daily pain medication and weekly laser-therapy sessions, which worked wonders! But Blackie's need for ongoing medical treatment, as well as his age and the fact that he was a bit of a cranky old man at times, made him a difficult dog to place. PAWS applied for a Petfinder Foundation grant to help: Blackie's adoption fee was sponsored, as were a year of medication and several laser-therapy sessions. Then, a miracle happened: A man who'd adopted another hard-to-place dog from PAWS a decade earlier arrived at the shelter. His dog had recently passed away and he wanted to meet Blackie. "We were beyond thrilled," says PAWS's Nicole King, "as we knew he understood what having an occasionally-difficult dog entailed and had the patience to work through those issues." All smiles in his forever home on Tuesday "Blackie hadn't reacted well to men," says PAWS President Sandi Outlaw. "But he went right up to his new dad and it was a match! I'm a strong believer in fate, and it was fate." Best of all, Blackie's new home is just half a block from PAWS, so he sees his dog and human friends often when they're hiking a nearby trail. "We could not have dreamed of a better outcome," says King. The Petfinder Foundation helps Blackie and thousands of other pets find their perfect homes. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
