More than 100 dogs were living in unimaginable conditions with a backyard breeder. After a heroic rescue, our grant helped many start new lives. Our grant helped California's Rescue Fenix feed and vaccinate the dogs it took in. The dogs included Labs, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Bernese mountain dogs, and dozens of poodles — all used to produce trendy "doodle" puppies. One of the dogs en route to the U.S. The breeder had moved to Mexico after being arrested for animal cruelty in the U.S. From Mexico, she was selling the puppies online to Americans. The dogs were sick, emaciated, filthy, and terrified. The breeder had run out of food and the starving animals had begun killing each other. Dead puppies were found in a freezer on the property. Anise when rescued (top) and today Although the dogs were unsocialized, they quickly came around once they realized they were safe. One who transformed in Rescue Fenix's care was Anise (pictured above). "Anise was super shut down," says Rescue Fenix Program Director Judy Clayton. "She did better around other dogs and loved her foster siblings. Eventually she became more confident and was adopted to the foster's in-laws in Oregon, where she is the princess of the house." Buddy when rescued (top) and today Like Anise, Buddy "was extremely shut down when he first went into foster and just laid on his bed for days," Clayton says. "He eventually opened up when the foster's dog was allowed to interact with him. "He learned to play and even did well with the cat. He was adopted to a family who say he is smart, sensitive and playful. He picks up on commands quickly and has become a huge part of their family." Oliver when rescued (top) and today Oliver smelled horrible when he was rescued, and required several baths and haircuts to get rid of the stench. Despite his past neglect, he craved affection. "I remember putting my hand in the cage and scratching him behind the ear," Clayton says. "He leaned in for more. "Although Oliver was cautious at first, he warmed up very quickly in foster. He went on to be adopted in a home with another doodle and is living the dream. His new mom says he is a snuggler." Bonnie early in foster (top) and today Bonnie was fostered by a volunteer who wanted a dog that enjoyed playing with her young son. "Bonnie clicked with him," Clayton says. "They both bounce off the walls and have so much fun together." Bonnie's foster family quickly adopted her.
