As fires rage in California, Oregon and Washington, we're helping the shelters that are keeping pets safe. You can help save pets from deadly wildfires. [View this email in your browser]( A burned cat at Whitman County Humane Dear Friend, As wildfires ravage the West Coast, we’re helping shelters and rescue groups care for the animal victims. This includes the pets of residents who had to flee their homes, as well as stray and abandoned animals, many of them injured by the fires. A rescued kitten at Whitman County Humane We've sent disaster funds to Whitman County Humane Society in Pullman, Washington, where fires were moving so fast, many locals were forced to leave everything -- including their pets. "As the fire has gone out, people’s animals are returning to the area burned and injured,” says Director of Shelter Operations Ashley Renae Phelps. Our grant will help rescue burned animals and pay for their medical care. A displaced bunny at Saving Grace We’ve also sent a grant to Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center in Roseburg, Oregon, which is helping to care for the pets of the 3,000 local residents who were forced to evacuate. “We are starting to see strays who we assume were left behind by owners who did not have time to get them out,” says Executive Director Megan Gram. “We hope to be able to reunite them with their owners in the coming weeks." Evacuated dogs at Sanctuary One Another grant went to Sanctuary One in Jacksonville, Oregon, which has taken in dogs from a nearby shelter that lost power and water and is working with law enforcement to rescue farm animals in evacuation zones. Sanctuary One has already rescued more than 60 displaced farm animals, from chickens to alpacas. "We are receiving new calls every hour from the sheriff department to assist in more farm-animal rescues," says Executive Director Megan Flowers. A bird at Exotic Bird Rescue Center of Oregon Among our other disaster-grant recipients, Exotic Bird Rescue Center of Oregon is providing foster care to the pets most sensitive to air quality, and Siskiyou Humane Society in Mt. Shasta, California, is finding and caring for pets left behind by local evacuees. Your support makes it possible for us to help these brave front-line animal defenders.
