Tell the Sacramento Zoo to Free Taylor Swift, the Eastern Bongo Who Hates Captivity So Much She Fled Her Enclosure! The most recent instance proving that wild animals are miserable in captivity occurred a few days ago at the Sacramento Zoo when a one-year-old eastern bongo calf known as Taylor Swift attempted to make a break for it. Clearly fed up with her monotonous life of being gawked at by zoo-goers in a small space that denies her the ability to live as nature intended, the clever young antelope managed to escape the enclosure she shares with her mom, Penny. But before Taylor Swift was able to make it out of the zoo, an employee noticed that she was not in her pen and called for a search party of workers to locate the missing animal. They quickly found her and brought her back to her enclosure, once again condemning her to long days of being disturbed by humans. You know that dreadful feeling you get when your heart drops into your stomach? When you know something bad has happened, but you just don’t know what yet? That’s exactly what the Mongo family must have felt when they heard a “pop” sound and then their dog Tonka let out a yelp. They would have never guessed that their one-year-old Alaskan Shepherd had been shot to death with an arrow by a bowhunter! The Care2 petition team is pleading with New Jersey Fish and Wildlife to put measures in place to make sure this never happens again. [Read more here.]( Do You Buy ‘Faux Fur’ Products? Here’s Something You Need to Consider As the horrific truth about the cruel fur industry has come to light in recent years, many animal activists have boycotted clothing and accessories made from animal fur. Even major fashion houses like Burberry, Stella McCartney, and Calvin Klein have ditched fur in favor of humane alternatives made from synthetic materials. In turn, the popularity of “faux fur” items has skyrocketed. But unfortunately, even buying products boasting a “faux” label doesn’t absolutely guarantee that you won’t be supporting the disgusting real fur industry in doing so. That’s because, frustratingly enough, major retailers often try to pass off fur sourced from live animals as being fake. The real impact of the exceedingly popular ingredient palm oil is becoming increasingly known, for the worst reason possible: orangutans are going extinct. As consumers, we can avoid buying products that contain palm oil and that certainly makes a difference, but real change has to come from the top as well. In the last 16 years, almost 60 million acres of rainforest have been destroyed because of the demand for palm oil, Greenpeace reports. This huge loss of rainforest directly impacts the animals who are literally losing their home and witnessing its destruction. In those same 16 years, the population of orangutans plunged from 250,000 to less than 100,000.
