Help Pass Groundbreaking Bill That Would Give Laboratory Dogs and Cats a Second Chance at Life Beagles are the number one breed of dog used for scientific research in laboratories. Their docile nature and smaller size make them one of the most beloved pets, but sadly these traits also make them ideal for experiments. Some of the Beagles and other dogs used in laboratories are lucky enough to be rescued by organizations like the Rescue + Freedom Project (formerly Beagle Freedom Project) and find homes once their time at the facilities is over. But this is not the reality for most laboratory animals. The Humane Adoption of Companion Animals in Research Act, legislation introduced in Maryland that provides an opportunity for dogs and cats used in scientific research to be adopted into homes when their time at a laboratory is over. [Read more here.]( Ban the Use of Wild Animals in Circuses After Tragic Accident That Killed an Elephant in Spain Once again tragedy has struck an innocent animal for the sake of human entertainment. A circus trailer transporting elephants in Spain recently overturned, killing one, injuring two others. While the rest escaped without injury, the incident certainly caused them an incredible amount of unnecessary stress. In the aftermath of this horrific accident, the Care2 Team established a petition addressing Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy Brey. Alaska has announced an emergency ban on the trapping and hunting of wolves in the areas surrounding Denali National Park. This ban comes after winter killings of wolves near the park more than doubled this year, causing both ecological and financial concerns. As a petition on Care2 explains, hunters typically target alpha wolves, which in turn has a drastic effect on the rest of the packs. In just seven years, the wolf population near Denali National Park plummeted from 143 to just 48. These dwindling numbers in turn have an effect on Alaska’s tourism industry, which relies on over half a million visitors to Denali each year, many of whom visit with the purpose of sighting wolves in the wild. The petition is calling on government officials to make this emergency ban permanent. A petition on Care2 written by American Forests states that the equivalent of 27 soccer fields of forests is destroyed every minute across the globe, for an estimated total of 18.7 million acres annually. How can we help tackle this destruction? By planting more trees. Reforestation is agreed to be one of the simplest solutions to tackling the growing problems surrounding climate change, and American Forests has set a goal of planting three million trees in 2018, and they are asking for your support in these efforts. Please take a moment to sign the petition here to show your support for our world’s forests. [Read more here.]( Tell TripAdvisor to Stop Promoting Captive Breeding Sloth ‘Scamtuary’ in Oregon! The Sloth Captive Husbandry Center in Rainier, Oregon is home to the world’s largest population of captive adult sloths. The facility claims to be a sanctuary and, as such, plays an “important” and “needed” role for the species – but the facts point to something very different. Unfortunately, despite their shortcomings in terms of animal welfare, the center continues to be promoted by TripAdvisor, whose animal welfare policy keeps on failing the very animals it should be protecting. The owners of the center have a history of illegally selling sloths and other exotic animals to the black market via illegal websites. Most of the animals they resell will be used in such facilities as roadside attractions or zoos. The USDA has already cited the owners for inhumane animal conditions that could harm the animals.
