Japan Is Illegally Hunting Whales Yet Again — Let’s Get the U.N. to Step In and Stop These Global Crimes! Japan has skirted around the international law by wrongfully stating their whale hunts are in the name of “science,” but anyone who knows anything about conservation knows this is a complete falsehood – including the International Court of Justice that ruled in 2014 these hunts have absolutely no scientific backing. The petition is calling on the U.N. to step in and protect Minke Whales by issuing economic sanctions on Japan for their blatant disregard for international law. This November 20th, the UK was set back a few decades when the majority of their members of Parliament voted that animals would no longer be recognized as sentient beings. This is an enormous blow to animal rights, and something must be done NOW before animals are allowed to suffer under the law. A petition on Care2 explains that after many years of fighting at the legislative levels, animal advocates succeeded in classifying animals as “sentient beings” under European law in 1997. [Read more here.]( 4 Lions Were Killed Outside Kruger National Park – Demand Non-Lethal Alternatives With less than 20,000 African lions remaining in the wild, you would assume everything is being done to help preserve this majestic species. It seems, however, that officials of the Mpumalanga province in South Africa aren’t taking it seriously. In fact, officials in the tourism office have killed four lions just this year for straying outside Kruger National Park. The Care2 team is calling out the senseless killings because, with only 1,600 lions that call Kruger home, there are other effective ways of lion control. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has set up a petition to make sure the ban on importing “trophies” from these hunts stays in effect. As the petition states, 83 percent of Americans are against trophy hunting, showing that the ban on importing trophies is non-partisan and represents the nation as a greater whole. Additionally, for a business-minded individual like President Trump, it is worthy to note that African elephants and lions bring in far more revenue in tourism when they are alive (like on safaris) than they do in trophy hunts. PLEASE take a moment to sign this petition addressed to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and speak up to protect our planet’s elephants, lions, and other magnificent, irreplaceable species. [Read more here.]( Rabbits and Sheep Are Subjected to Horrific Procedures in This Medical Training Center – Let’s Stop This Now! Although proven to be ineffective and now obsolete in most medical residency programs in the U.S. and in Canada, medical training involving live animals is still being carried out at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There, rabbits and sheep are dying at the hands of emergency medicine residents – despite the inadequacy and cruelty of the procedures. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has launched a petition to raise awareness for the issue and putting an end to the practices still in use at HCMC.
