This shouldn't be true but is. This book didn't just outsell every other coachin Did you know the most popular series of personal development books ever written has nothing to do with coaching?  This series hasn't just outsold the top five coaching books... It's obliterated them by 250 times!  Wild Fact: You could take the top 50 coaching books being sold on Amazon right now, and they don't come anywhere close in sales to this breakaway success.  Can you guess what it is?  Itâs not Think & Grow Rich, Rich Dad Poor Dad, or The Secret.  Itâs Chicken Soup for the Soul!  Combined, this series has sold over 500 million copies worldwide.  Amazing!  What is in each book that makes them so impactful and life-changing?  You guessed it: STORIES.  As great as many coaching books are, they all fall into the same paradigm trap.  Coaching = (Only) Questions.  The problem is coaches spend more time trying to remember the questions they are supposed to ask than paying attention to the person they are coaching!  Many coaches have real difficulty keeping focused on listening to the client (and being 100% present) because they are in their heads, trying to track what is being said while also simultaneously coming up with magical questions.  The net result?  They end up doing âchecklist coachingâ, where they proceduralise coaching to asking a series of (name your institution) approved questions⦠ ⦠which blindly assume:  1) that the âright questionâ is what does the magic⦠ 2) that questions alone are the best tool for creating breakthroughs for every coaching client in every situation.  3) that the knowledge, life experience, and expertise of every coach is largely irrelevant and should never be shared.  I could go on, but you get the point.  This paradigm that you should only ask questions and never share an opinion or story is BAD for the client.  It robs the client of one of the most powerful features of great coaching; deeper self-reflection.  Great coaching is a process of self-discovery through reflection, not a series of questions.  Questions seek answers; reflection sparks insights.  And thatâs where too many coaches today fall down. They rigidly follow a canned question - question - question approach, which is frequently frustrating for their clients.  And overlooks the awesome power of stories to transform.  Great coaching, at its core, is reflective, disruptive, and generates insights that change the person from within.  And thatâs why "Chicken Soup for the Soul" has been such a runaway success, outselling every coaching book ever written because it isnât a book of questions⦠ â¦itâs a book of stories that, through the process of reading and reflecting on the stories, change peopleâs story about themselves, their life, and whatâs possible.  Questions are essential, they are just one part of the toolkit used by elite coaches.  Combine questions with stories, Tristan, and you can supercharge your coaching incredibly quickly.  Imagine if you brought this kind of superpower to your next coaching session?  Next time, instead of reaching for a question or giving advice, see what you can provoke through a story⦠ Talk soon,
Tom  P.S. In case you are wondering: "Don't I have to be a great storyteller to tell stories that change people?" Actually, no you don't.
