LOTS OF PEOPLE want to exercise but just don’t do it.  I’ve one friend who for nearly 15 years has wanted to get in shape and lose his gut. Several times a year he sends me links to new ‘weight loss wonder pills’ and asks:  “Tom, do you think this works?”  The other day we were talking and I said:  “Henry, weight loss wonder pills never work… the solution you are looking for isn’t in a pill. It’s in your mind.”  “What do you mean?” He asked.  “The best type of motivation is an inside job…”  “…It doesn’t require you to force yourself, will yourself, compel yourself or beat yourself up when you fall behind. You don’t have to make a 1,000-foot picture of yourself being beach body ready. None of that is necessary.”  He leaned in, so I continued …  “People try and fail to motivate themselves all the time because they are using the wrong fuel - outside in motivation … promises of rewards, shiny objects, fame, followers. Our culture is set up to worship extrinsic motivators. The big house, the big car, the big job.”  He nodded in agreement.  “But extrinsic motivators only get you so far and actually can backfire.”  “Here’s the thing: if the goal you are pursuing will take months or years before you achieve it, there’s a much more potent and lasting fuel elite performers - athletes, executives, champions and CEOs use.”  “What’s that…”, he said excitedly, “…is it some kind of pill?”  “No, I laughed. MUCH, MUCH BETTER… you can carry this with you everywhere. And access it anytime to dial-up or down your motivation. Psychologists call them intrinsic motivators. I call them inside out drivers.”  “I call them DRIVERS because when you tap into this fuel source, they drive performance.”  “The more you train your body to use this fuel type, the easier it becomes to move from thought to action. And the cool thing is, the more you access this fuel, the greater your motivation becomes, the more driven you feel to take action!”  “And stick with it, until you’ve achieved what you want.”  “That sounds really useful. How do I get that kind of motivation?” He said, eager to get started.  Patience my friend. We’ll get to that soon.  (Stay tuned for episode 2 out Sunday.)  To your success, Tom PS: [What’s the biggest frustration or challenge you have with getting yourself (or others) motivated? Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
