The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( December 18, 2023 "They're poisoning the blood of our country." That's what former President Donald Trump had to say about immigrants at a dystopian rally in New Hampshire on Saturday. If you think that sounds disturbingâor similar to something you may have read in a history class once upon a timeâI'd say you're right: Adolf Hitler used similar language in his autobiography, Mein Kampf, writing that immigration led to "blood poisoning." So, to put it bluntly: The candidate who's likely to be the Republican presidential nominee is, knowingly or not, practically quoting Hitler. And based on what my colleagues [Dan Friedman]( and [Isabela Dias]( have written about Trump's plans for an anti-immigrant "blitz" if elected, proposals that reportedly include mass round-ups, detainment camps, and loyalty tests, voters should take what he says seriously. Republicans, on the other hand, disagree. When Meet the Press host Kristen Welker [pressed]( Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on the show yesterday morning to respond to Trump's words, he initially said he "could care less." Only after Welker continued to press him on whether he endorsed Trump's language did Graham subtly rebuke the remarks, stating, âThe president has a way of talking sometimes I disagree with, but he actually delivered on the border...if the only thing you want to talk about on immigration is the way Donald Trump talks, youâre missing a lot.â But words do, in fact, matter. As Yale Professor of Philosophy Jason Stanley [told]( Reuters of Trump's language: âRepeating dangerous speech increases its normalization and the practices it recommends. This is very concerning talk for the safety of immigrants in the US.â The Trump campaign hasn't responded to my requests for comment. âJulianne McShane Advertisement [Special Holiday Offers with CREDO Mobile]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Trump Repeats Fascist Talking Points About Immigrants on Campaign Trail]( The Biden campaign said the former president "parroted Adolf Hitler."
