The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     May 9, 2023 A Manhattan jury just found former President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll—to the tune of $5 million. Six men and three women handed down the verdict this afternoon after less than three hours of deliberation. As my colleague Russ Choma [reported from the courtroom](, the jury found that Carroll's attorneys had provided sufficient evidence to prove that Trump had sexually abused Carroll—and defamed her by denying it and disparaging her motives and character. However, they fell short of proving that Trump had raped her. Shortly after the verdict was announced, Trump was back on social media making the same sort of denials that got him in trouble in the first place. "I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO THIS WOMAN IS," he [wrote on Truth Social](, despite a preponderance of evidence to the contrary. "THIS VERDICT IS A DISGRACE - A CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME!" A jury believed that Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll. Now, it's up to voters to decide whether they agree—or care. —Abigail Weinberg Advertisement [House Store Ad]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Donald Trump Sexually Abused and Defamed E.
