Children need a safe haven, not politicized inertia The following advertisement from Kids in Need of Defense has been sent to you via Mother Jones' email list. [Children need a safe haven - Give now]( Dear Friend, Last weekend, The New York Times published an alarming report detailing “a new economy of exploitation: Migrant children, who have been coming into the United States without their parents in record numbers, are ending up in some of the most punishing jobs in the country.” Here at Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), we’ve been saying it for a decade: kids need lawyers to ensure they have the protections they deserve, inside and outside the courtroom. As it currently stands, unaccompanied children are not guaranteed access to an attorney to ensure their rights are protected through the immigration or asylum process. [But you could change that, Friend, by taking action today.]( The funding to pay for increased legal services is there: Congress has appropriated significant funding to expand legal representation of unaccompanied and migrant children. But the Biden Administration has not yet allocated that funding as Congress directed. As this chilling NYT piece shows, children are left paying the price. [Act Now]( This delay is causing unspeakable hardship to unaccompanied children. The kids interviewed shared stories of 12-hour shifts, back-breaking work, and a sort of indentured servitude that is reminiscent of the 1820s, not the 2020s. These children desperately need our protection. Please, [join Kids in Need of Defense now and demand that the Biden Administration properly allocates funding to provide unaccompanied children with life-saving legal services.]( These children need a safe haven, not politicized inertia. [They need you to take action now.]( Thank you, KIND PS: As you read this, children across the United States are being exploited in unsafe and illegal work environments. [Join KIND now and tell the Biden Administration to take immediate action to protect these children.]( [Mother Jones]( Mother Jones and its nonprofit publisher, the Foundation for National Progress, do not endorse any political candidate, political organization, commercial product, process, or service, and the views expressed in this communication do not constitute an endorsement, recommendation, or favoring by Mother Jones.
