The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     August 9, 2022 Hey y’all! My name is Becca Andrews, and I’m a reporter at Mother Jones whose work focuses on reproductive health care. I’m also the author of the forthcoming book [No Choice: The Destruction of Roe v. Wade and the Fight to Protect a Fundamental American Right](. Last week, after [Kansas voters overwhelmingly]( turned out the vote and made clear that they did not approve of a ballot measure to amend the state constitution to eliminate the right to an abortion, we decided to [publish a chapter of my book](, set in Kansas, a bit early. In the piece, [I report from the Trust Women clinic in Wichita](, which is well known as the clinic that was once home to George Tiller, a doctor who provided desperately needed abortion care for patients who were further along in their pregnancies. Once there, it was clear to me that the past does not stay in the past—it is very much a part of the present. Some of the anti-abortion protesters who pace the sidewalk outside the clinic have done so for decades. At least one has visited Dr. Tiller’s murderer in prison multiple times. Now, the clinic faces a swell in patients who have been forced to travel to Kansas from other states that have banned abortion in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling, in addition to rumors that anti-abortion protest efforts will be escalating soon. Ashley Brink, the clinic director, has heard rumors of a “Summer of Mercy–type protest,” referring to a six-week protest in 1991, organized in response to Dr. Tiller’s work, that ultimately resulted in some 2,700 arrests and remains one of the largest anti-abortion demonstrations to date. If you are compelled by what you read here, please consider [preordering my book](, and join us for a [conversation tonight (virtually)]( at the iconic San Francisco bookstore City Lights. I’ll be discussing the end of Roe v. Wade with a panel of brilliant experts, and I expect it to be an enlightening discussion. Hope to see you there. —Becca Andrews Advertisement [PRH Doubleday Title: The Destructionists]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [With FBI Raid, Merrick Garland Has No Choice But to Go Big on the Trump Probe]( The Justice Department needs an indictment to justify the search at Mar-a-Lago.
