Hi, {NAME}! I spent a lot of years keeping myself pretty closed off from community. I did it in the name of “protecting my time” or “making sure I wasn’t over-extending myself.” It wasn’t that I didn’t *want* friends. It wasn’t that I didn’t *long* for community. It was that I was scared. Scared of the risks. Scared of rejection. Scared of what people might think if they knew the real me. So I came up with a whole lot of excuses. “I don’t want to overextend myself.” “I’m an introvert.” “I’m not hospitable.” “I work full-time.” “I need to focus on my husband and kids.” And on and on they went. But in the past six months, as I’ve opened our door up to hundreds of people and opened my heart and life and developed much more deep and authentic relationships with local friends, I’ve learned that all those excuses can just go take a hike. Because making time each week to invest in relationships is so good for my soul. It’s so worth the risks and the “sacrifice”. Yes, it means that I don’t have as much time to invest in work. Yes, it means I don’t have as much time to invest in projects or reading or keeping my house clean, but my soul desperately needs time with community. And I’ve found that I’m better at all the hats I wear + I’m healthier and happier when I prioritize time with life-giving people — even when it doesn’t seem like it’s good for my calendar. Make space for people. Make space for real relationship. Take it from me: it’s so worth it!
