[Tom Malinowski for Congress]( As Americans, we all are praying for the families of the children gunned down in their elementary school on Tuesday. But as a member of Congress, I was elected to act, not to mourn or pray. I refuse to accept that America must forever be the only country in the world where parents have to fear that their children will be shot dead in school. In New Jersey, we have proven beyond doubt what works. We have no less crime, no less mental illness, no less evil, than other states. Yet we have one of the lowest gun fatality rates in the country — because we have some of the strongest gun laws. I have voted and will continue to fight for the passage of similar laws to protect all Americans. Here are some steps we should take, all of which are supported by most Americans and consistent with the 2nd Amendment: - We need to require violent history checks for anyone purchasing a firearm, with appropriate waiting periods, and to close the “boyfriend loophole" in the background check system to cover domestic partners convicted of stalking or abuse. - We should require safe storage of weapons for people living at home with children or someone with a mental illness or violent history. - We need a national red flag law, allowing law enforcement to confiscate weapons, with a court order, from people who may pose a danger to themselves or to others — as we have enacted in New Jersey. - We must restore the federal ban on military grade assault weapons that was saving lives in the decade it was in place. No criminal should be able to outgun police officers. - The minimum age for purchasing a rifle should be raised to 21, and we should limit the size of ammunition magazines so that shooters at least have to pause and reload. I know that many of us are frustrated that with every mass shooting, we pledge to do something, and then nothing happens — so frustrated, in fact, that we lose motivation to keep trying. Please, please, please do not give up hope. It is hard, but not impossible, to negotiate meaningful legislation that can beat the filibuster in the Senate. And if we hold the House, while gaining two more seats in the Senate, we can reform the filibuster. There are powerful forces in this country that would rather let more children die than to impose a single common sense obligation on gun owners. They want you to believe that you are helpless. They want you to disengage from politics. They know that there are more of us than there are of them, so destroying our confidence is the only way they can win. This is a terrifying and heartbreaking time. But we have got to lift ourselves up and make the next election a referendum on this madness. I will keep doing what I can, for the families and children of Uvalde, and all the families and children who fear they are next. I am counting on you, too. Thank you as always, Tom Malinowski Tom Malinowski served as a diplomat in the Obama administration, standing up to dictators overseas. Now he's standing up for our democracy as a Congressman representing New Jersey's 7th district. Tom Malinowski for Congress P.O.
