your efforts in my race made a difference [Tom Malinowski for Congress]( Dear friends, Yesterday, President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act, codifying into law the right of every American to marry whom they love, no matter what the Supreme Court might say. Last week, 39 Republicans joined us to pass this bill in the House, so we can celebrate it as a bipartisan achievement, reflecting what the overwhelming majority of Americans believe. But it’s just as important to remember this: If you hadn’t worked hard to elect a Democratic Congressional majority in 2020, the Respect for Marriage Act would never have gotten a vote in the House or Senate. Thanks to your votes, door knocks, and dollars, the Affordable Care Act is secure for middle-class families. Drug prices will be coming down for seniors. America is cutting greenhouse gas emissions and will lead the world to clean energy. Manufacturing jobs are coming home and we will be less dependent on China for technologies that are critical to our security. We’ll be fixing our roads and bridges, connecting every American to broadband internet, and New Jersey will be building our Gateway Tunnel. I have three weeks left in Congress as part of our Democratic House majority. We are racing to pass a budget that will fund our government and front-load aid to Ukraine, so that next year the MAGA crowd won’t be able to hold necessary spending hostage to their extreme demands. We are trying to pass the Electoral Count Act, so that no one can ever again do to our democracy what Donald Trump tried on January 6th, 2021. And as sad as I am that comprehensive immigration reform remains blocked, I hope we will at least pass legislation to protect the Dreamers before the year is done. Obviously, I wish I were coming back to Congress next year. But I also want you to know that your efforts in my race made a difference. Thanks to your support, we had the best turnout of any Congressional district in New Jersey, and I won the second highest number of votes of any Democrat in the state. In virtually every precinct and municipality that carried over from our original district, we did better in 2022 than in 2020. My opponent ran behind local and county Republican candidates in many areas, so we were getting some of the crossover votes we had worked hard to earn. It just wasn’t enough to overcome the loss through redistricting of some strong Democratic towns and the addition of heavily Republican ones. There is still far too much hate in our politics and violence in our country. But the overall message of this election is clear — voters chose moderation over MAGA, and problem solvers over performance artists, just about every chance they had. Our democracy is more secure than it was. The new GOP majority in the House will either find ways to work with Democrats to get some modestly good things done (we can always hope!), or it will pursue a radical agenda that gets blocked by the Senate and President Biden and helps us beat them in 2024. Either way, they will not undo our achievements of the last few years. Many of you have asked me about my next steps, and the honest answer is that I don’t know my plans just yet. But I will stay in touch. And I will stay in the fight. I know that you will too, and for that I am grateful. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
