[Tom Malinowski for Congress]( {NAME}, I am writing this to you on the 46th day of a war that was only supposed to last a week. Each day of Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine has brought horrors and heartbreak. But the Ukrainiansâ courage, optimism, and success in pushing back the second largest army in the world should raise our spirits. They are fighting for all of us. They are showing that democracy in this world is alive and kicking, and worth the trouble of defending. I am asked each day if we are doing enough to help Ukraine win. Each time I see a hospital or train station bombed, or read about an innocent child murdered, my answer is that we should do more to end the evil Putin unleashed. But please do not underestimate the power of what we have already done. It was the United States that warned the world of Putinâs plan to launch this war. Many of our allies, and even many Ukrainians, didnât believe us. But we persuaded them to prepare. The sanctions that have crippled Russiaâs economy were ready to go on day one. We readied our own defenses, foiling numerous planned cyberattacks on our homeland. And of course, we have provided Ukraineâs brave defenders the weapons they are using to turn the tide. In 46 days, with our help, they have inflicted more casualties on the Russian invaders than the Russians suffered in ten years in Afghanistan (and more than we suffered in 20 years in Afghanistan and Iraq combined). There are now ten US or European anti-tank weapons in Ukraine for every Russian tank â and Russia has lost 25% of its tanks. There is no weapon in our arsenal that can send the rest of those tanks back to Moscow tomorrow. Even if we sent the US military into the fight (which Iâd oppose), the Russians would still commit war crimes as they retreat. But now that Ukraine has won the first, defensive phase of the war â by defeating the Russian army around Kiev and holding other major cities â Iâve urged the Biden administration to provide the more advanced weapons they will need to drive Russian forces fully from the territory they seized. Thatâs the only way to end the cruelty of this war for good. Thatâs the best way to show dictators around the world that if they try what Putin did, they will lose. I am also advancing my bill to allow the Russian assets we have frozen â the yachts, villas, planes, and bank accounts that in a real sense belong to Putin â to be put to use to rebuild Ukraine when the war is done. There is no way we can send Russiaâs wealth back to Putin while Ukraine lies in ruin, even if his forces have been beaten. And here are some more resolutions: Letâs make sure that crooks from countries like Russia can never again use America to hide the wealth they steal from their people. I have a bipartisan bill called the Enablers Act, which would close the remaining loopholes, and Iâll fight to pass it. Even as we work to lower gas prices, letâs speed our transition to clean American energy so we are never again at the mercy of oil rich dictators, whether in Russia, Saudi Arabia, or Iran. Letâs bring manufacturing of technologies like microchips back home, too, so our supply chains arenât dependent on others in a crisis. To that end, I helped write the America Competes Act, and was just appointed to the House-Senate Conference Committee that will work to get it to the President. Finally, letâs purge our democracy of the corruption and propaganda that Putin and his ilk have exported to us. Thankfully, we now have a president who, when Ukraine was attacked, had only one question for President Zelensky: âHow can we help?â Not: âCan you do us a favor?â But last week, a third of the House Republicans voted against a resolution supporting NATO. Fox News still broadcasts pro-Russian lies to millions of Americans every night. We came so close to losing our own democracy on January 6th, 2021. We narrowly averted reelecting an American president who would have taken our troops out of Europe and our country out of NATO â the very president who in 2019 extorted President Zelensky for campaign dirt by withholding the weapons Ukraine is now using to blow up Russian tanks. So letâs keep helping Ukraine. And then letâs vote like Ukrainians fight. Democracy everywhere is worth it. Thank you as always for your help. Tom Tom Malinowski served as a diplomat in the Obama administration, standing up to dictators overseas. Now he's standing up for our democracy as a Congressman representing New Jersey's 7th district.
