Snapshot of a pivotal moment in my life: I was 12, and it was a Sunday. I remember because it was Sunday Chinese school, and the teachers had decided to host an impromptu talent show. Wanting to impress my teacher, I volunteered the only talent I could think of â reciting one of Sun Tzuâs Art of War chapters, from memory, in Chinese. My teacher was very impressed, and so, I had my show plan. Performance time: As I stood on the stage and scanned the crowd, I beamed a little at my mom and dad. I figured theyâd be so proud of me, and couldnât wait for my pat on the head after the show. In fact, I was already anticipating my dadâs toothy grin, and the smiling head tilt my mom likes to do when sheâs happy. (After all, they were the ones whoâd worked so hard teaching me the Art of War .) All the times my dad had had me recite the chapters over and over paid off, and my performance went off without a hitch. But⦠My parentsâ reaction wasnât exactly what I thought it would be. Grimly looking me straight in the eye, my dad scolded, âYou shouldnât have done that.â He must have seen how confused I was, because he softened a little in his explanation: âThe point of having advantagesâlike knowledge, or moneyâis not to flaunt them. Theyâre for you to use . And the less others know about it, the better.â Over the years, Iâve come to appreciate that wisdom more and more. And that story, plus everything behind it, is why I donât do what a lot of other business coaches do: I donât enjoy talking a lot about my revenue or net worth. I donât flaunt my expensive things on Instagram. And while I do like to share travel photos from time to time, I intentionally stay away from sharing the usual clichés. The point(s) being⦠First, you can live and do business however you want. Including sharing as much or as little as you want. Thereâs no one way you âhaveâ to do anything to succeed. Second, a mini marketing lesson: How you âattractâ a client sets the tone for your entire relationship with them. Another reason I donât use that kind of marketing often is because of the kind of person it attracts â someone whoâs only focused on the money and the things. Instead, I prefer to run my business, and work with clients, in this way: Heck yes, we make plenty of money. Currently most of my private clients make anywhere from $30K to $200K+ per month. But the way we do it, is that itâs the result of having a business, creating a lot of impact, developing world-class communication, marketing, sales, and business skills. Because you are doing what you want to do. Not because the money is the end-all-be-all. Third, I believe that a little mystery, a little privacy, is way more interesting than living your life out on social media. Over the past year, my clients have lived incredible lives⦠* Truly loving their business for the first time ever â while bringing in tens of thousands of dollars, in profit, in a single month. * Traveling to Paris, Venice, and other parts of Europe, for a few weeks and completely disconnecting to enjoy the momentâ¦because their businesses were set up for it. * Flying across the country, business class, for a five-star weekend, just because they had the time, flexibility, and money to do so * Remodeling their home (which looks so good it could fit in Architectural Digest ), buying new homes, and upgrading all their design and furniture â because their businesses could pay for it. And not one of them had to share any of this on social media in order to perpetuate their brand or their amazingness. Again, nothing wrong with that.
