One of my favorite analogies for building your business: A rocket launch. But seriously, here’s

One of my favorite analogies for building your business: A rocket launch. (From the kid who used to have planet facts plastered all over her walls: Who says passions can’t mix?) But seriously, here’s how a rocket works in super basic detail: * To lift-off (as with starting anything new), you need a burst of energy that breaks through the inertia of the status quo. * Depending on the rocket’s destination, different bursts of energy are pre-programmed to help it change direction as needed * As you break through certain layers of the launch, the rocket sheds parts it no longer needs (so they don’t weigh it down). Oh and possibly most importantly: * Many, many engineers spend a lot of time planning the logistics for weight, fuel, programming, etc., so that they can reverse engineer exactly what the rocket needs to do at different points of its launch to be able to reach its destination. Just like with growing your business. So let’s break it down, and talk through a few questions that could help you get to your next goal a little faster. It helps to start with the end in mind. Or more specifically, “What’s the next phase I want to get to?” Common milestones that are good for focusing are: (1) First sale; (2) Three sales; (3) Consistent $5K months; (4) Consistent $10K months; (5) Consistent $20K months; (6) Consistent $50K months; (7) Adding in a more leveraged product to free up time; (8) Consistent $100K months Because once you have the end goal, it’s a lot easier to figure out how to “reverse engineer” getting there. Starting with: “What do I need to do to build ‘breakthrough’ momentum?” Sometimes that “burst” can be created by simply taking more action. Like the burst of action it takes — marketing yourself without “knowing” fully what you’re doing, feeling confident, or having complete “clarity” — to get to your first sale. Other times, it takes a “burst” of deep thinking and planned action. Like maybe building a systematized funnel to drive to consistent $50K+ in sales per month. But at every stage, there are also going to be things you have to “let go of,” so they don’t hold you back. In other words: “What do I need to let go of that’s no longer serving me?” Sometimes the answer to this is tactical. And other times, it’s mental or emotional. For example, to get to consistent $5K or $10K per month, one of the most important things to “let go” is the fear of looking bad — like looking stupid, or salesy. So that you can make the mistakes you need to make to be able to learn. So you can hit those milestones! But to get to $100K per month, it also takes letting go of doing things that you just no longer have the bandwidth for. Like saying yes to every potential prospect or business partner who wants to do a virtual “coffee” with you. Or needing everything to be “perfect” …because you realize some parts of your business are just going to be messy and imperfect, and that’s OK because they’re not that important. All so you can double down on the few things — whether its strategies, hires, personal shirts, or products — that will get you to and keep you at $100K+ per month. But possibly most importantly, and I fully admit I’m stretching the analogy here a little bit (or maybe even more than a little bit): For a rocket launch, it’s math (and physics and all those good things…but you get the idea). In other words, there’s no doubt that there is a solution. It’s just up to the team to figure it out. And every setup and challenge that pops up? Is just another “math” problem to be solved. Now, I will be the first to call out that business is NOT just math. It’s a very imperfect and sometimes even painful, but ultimately beautiful mix of emotions, human challenges, and ups and downs. But even taking all that into account, you know what has helped me time and time again over the last near decade? Grounding back into the reminder that at the end of the day, every problem I’m experiencing is solvable. It has been solved. And my only job is to figure out the solution that works best for me and my business. Passing that along today, with these three powerful questions, in case it’s helpful to you too.

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
